Margate Unveil Blue Print For The Future

Unfortunatly I have to agree in some respects with MM. It is good to see that the Thanet youth are getting some decent quality coaching and respect. I have coached here for over 18 years and this is as I said the first time I've seen a chance for my players to get a look in.

Being so close to youth football at this present time was not my intention in fact I gave up for 3 years due to the frustration of seeing really good local players wasted and never given a chance.

I then got involved again as manager 3 years ago and everything had changed. Ramsgate were playing 3 of my old team in the first team and things seemed to be looking up.

Its taken all this time to really see a difference something myself and others have been telling everyone for years that the youth in this area can be good enough with the right caoching, mental attitude and guidence for not only Rymans premier but above.

Thanet Youth teams have been doing well at district level aswell getting into cup finals at several age groups local lads being signed for Kent 4 from Thanet schools last year at u14s.

So the future for these lads need to be addressed now before its to late. Margate, Ramsgate whoever gets these lads need to make sure they extract the full potential from these lads and help them to become better players.

As for whos got the better coaches I don't give a sh1t, same as team results don't matter at youth level its all about reaching your individual goal. If that meens playing at reserve, Sunday league or Premiership level so what just as long as the coaches have done their best thats all you can do.

I just like to finish on thanking all the parents that put themselves forward to help run these youth teams either managing or coaching because they do it for nothing, it takes up so much time and you have to take stick of so many parents who's sons are the next Ronaldo. without them youth football would'nt exsist. So if any of you forum Mangagers coaches have some spare time give me a ring if your now that interested about the youth of Thanet im sure I could find something you could help with.

I have to say that player (and parents of young players) will follow results and at some point this would mean good coaching. With so many local clubs there is always going to be good and not so good. I`ve always thought that managers at this level should not be doing it because they have a son in the team. Bigtw is more than correct about running a team, I know of a manager who used to put his hand in his pocket on a weekly basis to keep the side going and sad to say that quite a few parents off load their children on a Saturday purely to get some free time and do nothing to help. How many games do we see managers running the line whilst listening to parents coaching. There is a core of dedicated people who are unsung that, as Bigtw, says keep Thanet football going.

Totally agree with you bigtw that parents are very important. Yet when these lads get to 13 or 14 years of age those Dads managing the local youth teams look towards Ramsgate, and now Margate, to filter their better players to.

In the past Ramsgate just carried on using Dads, who by no fault of their own wanted guidance, or their team to be taken on by proper coaches. Now up until a couple of years ago none of these dads had coaching badges. This is obviously a new thing that Ramsgate or maybe the FA have brought in.

What I'm trying to say is that boys of this age and especially 16, 17, 18 years of age have normally progressed to the full extent of what a normal Dad can teach them. This most certainly was the case with myself. At this stage the clubs need to take them onboard with proper coaching staff. I believe this should be ex-players that have played the game at a descent level. Naturally there could be the odd individual that has this ability but normally this is not the case.

All I was trying to say is Margate seem to have put this in place, and like you say, Ramsgate are hoping to do so in future.

The only reason I got involved on this topic is due to the fact that Ian Sanderson was trying to make a great deal out of something that never materialised.

Especially as a lot of the players involved would have been the one's labelled as "Ramsgate rejects". Yep that's right Ramsgate had many of them 1st but they were told that they weren't up to it. Now, I believe, that can only be put down to 2 things. Either the people making the initial decision did not know what they were looking at. If they did then the coaching staff at Margate have managed to do a far better job and turn the initally less talented footballers into better players.

Very lucky indeed for these boys that Margate brought back a youth and reserve policy, because what would have become of these lads bigtw if they hadn't?

None of this discussion would be taking place, for starters, because Ramsgate wouldn't have made an approach for MW, and a list of his players.

Sorry TSO but Margate also run and have done so until last season all their youth side with Dads. even now upto u16s it will be perents of the lads who manage or coach the teams Louis Scott the youth chairman had a son in his team until last year.

Lets face it who is going to put around 10 to 15 hours of their time into something that actually cost them to do without having their son play.

I think your find that Generation sports( a monney making granted organisation) approached Ramsgate on several occations to start something on the other side similar to the tie up with Ursaline.

When it started going tits up with Piper resigning Mark weatherley was asked if he would like to come over and be part of the Ramsgate setup. I would like to add his reply took over 3 weeks to come to and it was suggested by himself that if he come he would bring players with him as any coach would naturally do.

Players come and go at youth level for one reason or another. I had 3 players leave my side this year because they could'nt stand up to the Kent league travelling and commitment. Or they want to play with their new friends and their team only trains once a week. Plus loads of other reasons. teams come over to ramsgate to join the Kent league without realising how much more time and effort is required the manager usually quits and the club gets the blame. Sorry but its the parents who must shoulder the blame because most can't be bothered to transport their kids to home games let aloan somewhere like dartford.

As for making a dicision on weather a player is good enough to progress from u16s onwards I don't know anyone who does'nt make mistakes and lets players go who end up being superstars. It would just be nice for those players to recognise who helped them along the way throughout their learning path.

I wish all local lads good luck and hope they enjoy playing football for a very long time.

I totally agree with everything that you've just said Bigtw, and what a strain it is for the manager; and normally a couple of the parents, once they hit this level.

It's been a real pleasure reading your post and I am very pleased that a few of my mis-conceptions have been put straight.

Thankyou pal and good luck with all you continue to strive to do with the youth. Must admit I've given it all up, as my lad's much older now and I just enjoy watching Margate on a Saturday. Plus I'll probably go back to Ramsgate this season when Margate are away outside Kent.

Once again good luck. ByeBye.

I think the Red side win this argument. They obviously have a better set up than Margate all round. They've even got covered terracing but then we do have the promise of an announcement soon re. the stadium whooppee doo like we haven't been hearing announcements on the ground for f()cking years. Their squad is already complete while we have four players with one of them on the transfer list..anyone explain this? They have a proven successful management team whilst we have a below average ex player with no credentials in management whatsoever, Rob Butler was correct about Southall, awful track record. Add to that a very dodgy shambolic boardroom and I think you can safely say Margate are Thanets second side.

I am willing to debate this with any of the rose coloured tinted specs brigade provided they come up with a reasonable argument against the points I've made because so far nobody has given any plausable reason for why our new set up is going to work. Bottom five I'd say-right, now bring it on.

WelshBob- very honest post. Sad to say, if you lot don't sign 4 experienced quality players as a spine to your team, you are going down. Chucking all the youngsters in is ludicrous, Rams bled them in gradually in the KENT LEAGUE....not the Ryman Prem!! Seriously think you are going to struggle without the experienced spine- the likes of Jackson et al.

I would be in a panic right now!!

Another Leyton is on the cards in my eyes, unless there is a plan...can't believe the players you have let go.

Stupid gamble in my opinion

At this stage i have no reason to doubt that Ashby will get some experience in.

Thats what he has stated he will be doing, and as before, i think the whole youth thing has been overexaggerated. There may be more youth in the side, but no-one has said that its going to be all under20's as many seem to be rreading into it

I have a feeling that Ashby will deliver-unlike Trott who kept on promising but failed to deliver the players -just have a feeling that Ashby will do what he says he is going to do.

We shall see.

All we have got is hope. We've made no progress in two years and here we are again taking a gamble. There's no difference between this situation and when Trott took over except Trott was a better player than Ashby. Ramos maybe right.

Significant progress with reserves and youth ?

Does it matter who played best-Ashby is a manager-not a player manager.

I simply hope he will be a better manager.

Otherise, whilst i have to agree with you factually Hornet at this stage, most expectations are lower.Ashby has not inherited a side that should have romped the league in 2006/7.

He has a difficult task-but with less expectations-get us mid table as far as i am cioncerned without kamikaze defending.

I reckon he will achieve that.

I think we were right to release some of the players we released apart from Saunders and Pinnock, because the others had become to old and slow really. Mckimm has pretty much been repleaced by Paul Smith, but how many games Smith will play is anyones guess. I believe Ashby will bring in the experience needed and he has said theat he is going to bring the youths in gradually. So thanks for your concern, but i am one of many who are no longer panicking after last weeks positive open meeting
