Howard Mackler was the reason why I have only " lined" in a match the once. It was years ago, Hale End Athletic v Southend Manor behind Wadham Lodge and Mr Mackler was at his brilliant best and " dived" in my eyes as he entered the penalty area. As an honest club linesman I waved " no offence" but the Referee overruled it telling the spectators in no uncertain manner that " That lino hasn't got a clue" . I know exactly what Howard did and he scored from the resultant spot kick. I never " officiated " again ! A lovely lad and one of the all time ESL favourites in my book.

You are certainly dredging up some very happy memories for me as Q5 recalls a very proud season that I was part of when I first came onto the Essex Senior League scene with Mrs LC. The faces of the hierarchy when they opened the envelope to announce my club's name after being such naughty boys just one season before will stay with me forever ! Thanks again, Coach and congratulations on your Sportsmanship Award, just pipping Southend Manor for the honours again !
