a plea from ignorance

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon y'all. I've just gotten started following Ebbsfleet when I saw the fans had bought a team, thought that was pretty cool.

Now, here's my ignornace: How can y'all have won a cup... but are still playing games? I thought you had to finish in the top 8 to even advance, now I see Ebbsfleet (seems to have come in 10th) has won the Fed Cup. Also, how can players be playing for different teams during a season? I understand how a player can play for a foreign team, then go home for they Olympics and such, but it seems some players are with 3 teams a year.

Thanks for being patient with me

Is this a troll or a genuine question? It is not like America where you do not understand a draw or need some excitement at the end of a league season with play offs to see who 'wins the league'. We are not still playing games, the FA trophy was the last one, and is a cup competition played throughout the season.

Oops... FA, not FC. I understand draw... it's a tie both teams get a point and nobody has to die trying to win the game.

I'm no troll, actually, that's the second time someone has asked me that. I truely thought you kept playing almost year round. Seriously, explain it to me once, that will be all it takes. I'm smart, I just don't have the information to process.

46 games in one league season. Starts in August, ends in april/may. 24 teams play each other home and away. Also FA trophy and league cup, plus the FA cup. Cups are knockout with no relevance to the league. Top team in the league at the end of the season gets promoted, then teams 2-5 go into the play offs for the other promotion place.

I see, like what we have at the end of college basketball season. Each conference has a tournament to go decide which team gets an automatic bid to the bigger tournament, althought the best teams are pretty much a lock. A bad team can put together a good stretch and win the conference tournament but the really good teams still go on as well. Makes sense now.

Well the ip is a Houston Texas one so this is an american

FA = Football Association

23 home games 23 away games. 3 point for win 1 for draw. Team with most points goes to next league. Position 2 plays position 5 and position 3 plays 4 (over two games) with winners playing each other to go up a league

Sultane Shield. Teams picked at random . Play each other. Winners get through to next round. All ties settled in 90mins or if not 30mins extra time and then peanlty shootout

FA Trophy open to all non leageu teams(teams outside the top 92)is as above but of match is drawn it is replayed and then if still not settled in 90mins an additional 30mins extra time and then peanlty shootout

FA Cup :- A competition same as baove but open to all clubs (700+). The one rule is that we must loose our first game often away to a team ranke dlower then us with an athletics tracka round it.

Think you need to do a lor of reading.

Erik, it's not really the same as our NCAA basketball tournament. The cup competitions are knock-out tournaments, yes, but they run all season, parallel to the regular league competitions. You don't qualify to enter them. All eligible teams start in the cup. So it's essentially two simultaneous competitions--the regular league (double-round-robin), and the cup (single elimination, for the most part).

Hope that helps. If you have access to it, watch as much as you can on the Fox Soccer Channel (sorry guys, that's what it's called in the States). The learning curve about the competitions is pretty quick and a helluva lot of fun.

HAHAHA!! This is a great thread. I have had MyFC members from the States ask me the same sort of questions - I can see how easy it is for people to get confused, e.g., FA Cup, FA Trophy, FA Vase .... etc etc

Now, that's what I'm talking about... the cup competitions run simultaneously to the regular season! I knew I wasn't totally making these confusing things up in my head. Okay, getting clearer now. I can see how there are different cups for different levels, sure. I know I've got Fox Sports "Soccer" on my cable package, well, I think I do. Someone said my IP was a Houston one... how's that? I live probably 200 miles from Houston.
