Meg's Day Out at Wembley!

Recommended Posts

Thought you might like to read the article I posted on the MyFC website about my 7 year olds big day at Wembley - she hasn't shut up about it yet and is desperate for a trip to Stonebridge Road.

It's 9am on Saturday May 10th. The car has just turned off the A47 Norwich Southern Bypass onto the A11 about 12 miles from home. The first 'Are we there yet?' drifts over from Meg, sitting in her car seat listening to 'Come on Sacha' on her MP3 player, whilst chewing her red toothbrush. This is her first season of watching football, her ninth match of the season but her first Fleet match. Her season started way back in August with The Fratellis 'Chelsea Dagger' blasting out of the over loud PA system at Deepdale as the ever hopeful Canaries embarked on what turned out to be a topsy turvy season with a 0-0 draw at Preston. Sometime towards the end of October (when Norwich City were plummeting into freefall) I reacquainted myself with the MyFC website and decided to take the plunge. My favourite uncle who first introduced me to the delights of football used to live in Erith, I have cousins in Bromley and Folkestone and my favourite aunt now lives in Herne Bay - with my Kent credentials established I thought that Ebbsfleet were an interesting prospect.

With a home game and away game under my belt by the middle of March, Meg is beginning to take my interest in the Fleet seriously. By the time we qualify for the FAT Final she already knows about The Red Toothbrush, Sacha, Hooky and Lord Chas. She insists on wearing my Fleet scarf to school and can't wait to go to 'Wem-ber-lee' (she has the correct pronounciation instilled in her from the start).

We eventually get to the MyFC meet up without a hitch. I head for the bar whilst Meg heads for the bouncy castle. As always, within 5 minutes she has made friends with a number of other MyFCers children - I am particularly impressed with Cullen and Bubbles two girls who are sporting home made Ebbsleet necklaces and the same 14p Tesco value red toothbrushes that me and Meg have (at least I did have until I lost mine between Stanmore and Wembley Park Station).

An hour and a half later after putting many faces to avatars and wishing we had more time to meet more people, we head for Wemberlee. Meg has had her picture taken with Miss Yorkfox and the legendary red toothbrush so she is ecstatic. It's hot but we are cheered up by the fact that there's considerably more red and white than yellow and blue - Meg's her usual sporting self - 'Are they Torquay fans - they're rubbish!'

We eventually enter the stadium with about 10 minutes to kick-off. Meg gets to see Hooky parading around pitchside. The game commences and after early Torquay pressure, the Fleet regain their composure and start to press further forward. Meg's enjoying the game but also enjoying the side attractions - the beach ball being knocked about between Blocks 132 & 133, the thunderous foot stamping on the terrace and watching the instant replays on the big screen located just behind us. Thankfully, soon after having his penalty saved, Cristiano McPhee slots home what turns out to be the winning goal - the place erupts and Meg stands on her seat joining in with the 'Who Are Ya?!' taunts towards the Torquay fans.

Increasingly in the second half the Fleet look like adding to their tally. Despite this not happening, the series of Mexican waves from the Fleet fans keeps Meg amused and when she eventually gets to punch the beach ball her day is made. The game finishes, ecstasy ensues and Meg is most interested by the fact that Sacha has disposed of his shirt and is wearing a vest - sometimes I worry about her! Almost surreally, as the Fleet step up to get the Trophy the strains of 'Chelsea Dagger' echo around the stadium - Meg's season appears to have gone full circle but the adventure has really only just begun.
