Probably at least 16 teams next season old chap which means that every team will have a minimum of -

30 league games

6 league cup group games

1 Gordon Brasted Cup game

1 FA Cup game

1 FA Vase game

plus at least one game in the county and other miscellaneous cups (Thameside, East Anglian etc) that they enter.

This leads me to a suggestion to put before the league committee. Why don't we also have a repechage cup to give extra games to those clubs who fail to get beyond the league cup group stages. This could also be played for on a home and away, quarter, semi and one-off final basis and make the latter part of the season more interesting for many more ESL clubs. Perhaps our revered Chairman might consider donating 'The Rob Errington Trophy' for this purpose.

And a final note to Coachie. The ESL season normally starts a week before the extra, extra, extra preliminary round of the jolly old FA Cup to give any participating teams in that round a competitive game beforehand.

Good planning on the part of our fixture secretary I would say.

Thanks TBG,so i assume it's going to be the 9th August because on another web-site the FA preliminary round is on the 16th August.

Well the Boro's first game in 2007 was at home to Beaumont on August 11 so August 9 2008 sounds about right.

Why not just have 30 league games, get rid of the ridiculous league cup where you end up playing the same team 4 times a year and where most teams put out under strength sides anyway.

That way you don't have to play 2 games a week and get situations where you end up playing 15 odd games in a month. With all the games that get cancelled througout the season some free wekkends would be a good idea.

You already have one. It's called the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy. The only reason every club is entered into it at the present time is because of the low numbers of member clubs. I'm sure if the ESL gets up to 20/22 clubs (or even 18?) it may revert back to becoming the supplementary cup for clubs knocked out in the League Cup first round that its predecessor, the Harry Fisher Memorial Trophy, was for so many years.

If the membership of ESL is increased next season( say to 20 clubs) does the league cup group stages get reduced to a straight knockout like the GBMT ?

BTW as far as we know we will be in the ESL next season.

That may well be so FM but my suggestion was based around the present 16 or so team league with the league cup being on an initial four group table basis in which half the league teams are discarded after the group stages end.

What was the original format of the GBT as a repechage competition in a larger league format?
