As I keep saying to my friend, non league manager, non league players, unless they get rid of and stop signing mediocre conference players, they will struggle.

There is not a very great deal of difference between mid-table League 1, League 2 and the top of the Conference IMHO....

I think the problem was that the players signed were 'good' Conference players, but 'mediocre' League players. Possibly as case of trying to do things on the cheap.

I think that the majority of the players that Stimpson signed are reasonable league players provided that they are part of team of good league players and that only a couple of them are on the pitch.

 

Gillingham's problem is that there were often five or more "conference players" on the pitch with not enough quality around them.

He has what it takes to play at that level.
