An interesting week for the ESL

Recommended Posts

The FA Leagues Committee meets today, tomorrow and Wednesday to decide who goes up, down and sideways in non-league football.

Prior to what comes out of the ESL AGM here is what I understand to be the present position.

Definite - Concord Rangers up to Ryman 1 North

Probable - Beaumont resigned to go down to Essex Olympian

Takeley to come up from Essex Olympian

Possible - Enfield 1893 to transfer to the SSML (but there will

need to be a club transferred back over in their

place- any thoughts).

Wivenhoe to come down from Ryman 1

North (although I believe that they have

asked to go into the Eastern Counties

League)

Bethnal Green United to join from the Cherry Red

Middlesex League ?

FC Clacton have asked to transfer from ECL 1.

AFC Kings say that they wish to transfer from the

Ilford Premier but I don't know where they intend

to play.

Anyone got any comments on the above or knoweledge/rumours about any other club involvement.

Definite - Concord Rangers up to Ryman 1 North

Probable - Beaumont resigned to go down to Essex Olympian - Probably fact, if it's straight from the ESL as reported.

Takeley to come up from Essex Olympian - I think that's also a definite now, their ground is up to scratch and The ESL has vacancies.

Possible - Wivenhoe to come down from Ryman 1

North (although I believe that they have

asked to go into the Eastern Counties

League) - Highly doubt it will happen. Their reserves are in the Ridgeons Reserve League, aswell as being a former Eastern Counties side.

Bethnal Green United to join from the Cherry Red

Middlesex League ? - Spartan South Midlands League for them methinks.

FC Clacton have asked to transfer from ECL 1. - Is this fact? Really doubt it they would. And if they did, and the FA agreed - they would be near enough forced to send Tiptree, Halstead, Saffron Walden, Stanway, Harwich and Parkeston, Brantham (just promoted) and Brightlingsea (just promoted) accross to the ESL.

AFC Kings say that they wish to transfer from the

Ilford Premier but I don't know where they intend

to play. - They have a private ground. I think they just have ESL ambitions, I don't think they plan to apply anytime soon though.

Beaumont & Takely is officially a swap between the two Leagues.

If Beaumont & Bethnal Green were to swap grounds, it would make sense to have BGU in the ESL.

If Clacton were allowed to join the ESL, Wivenhoe would be there as well (the whole point of the FA becoming involved was to prevent clubs travelling past other clubs at the same level in a different League to get to League fixtures).

If Enfield were to swap, it would most likely be with St Margaretsbury or Brimsdown Rovers. But don't rule out Haringey Borough, Kentish Town or Hertford Town.

I just read on the TK site that Wivenhoe will be playing in the Eastern Counties Premier next season.

I can't really be bothered at the moment but what are the clubs that have progressed to the Ryman over the years since the ESL formation in 1970.

Here's a starter

Concord

Waltham Abbey

Enfield Town

Ilford

AFC Hornchurch

over the last few seasons.

What in the past before that?

You can include Romford and Basildon as well although both eventually took voluntary redundancy.

Basildon went into the Athenian league and were then promoted into the Isthmian.

I hadn't realised that Romford got promotion in 96. I thought that they'd just cuckoo'ed into Collier Row. grin

I thought that we'd established that Wivenhoe had been in the ESL.

Can we count Woodford Town?

Wivenhoe have gone to the Eastern Counties and Ilford have been reprieved from relegation. No step 4 clubs will be dropping to the ESL. Full list of Step 1-4 Leagues will be on the FA website at 1pm today (but are probably already on another's site as the e-mail came from the FA yesterday!)

You may also be interested to know that the Ryman League have approved the Ilford & Waltham Forest groundshare on the basis that athletics meetings do not take place between August & April at Cricklefields so it is not classed as a three-way groundshare.

Basildon's part of the Athenian became an extension of the Isthmian when they formed div 2.

Romford won the ESL that year so would have gone up in thier own right anyway subject to ground grading

Thanks for the update FM. The poor old ESL gets dumped on again.

Just as a matter of interest anyone do ANY athletic meetings actually take place at the London Borough of Havering Bridge Avenue Stadium at any time ever?

The league and cup double in fact old fruit. You're getting irascible in your old age aren't you?

Although the facts of that period are indisputable the why's and wherefore's of what went on behind the scenes at the same time are shrouded in mystery to us present Bororites and will never probably be explained satisfactorily unless the principal protagonists involved decide to emerge from wherever they are and go public with a Jim Carrey damascene moment.

This is even more confusing as Hornchurch Stadium is a 6 lane track, therefore cannot hold official meetings which is why all meetings are held at Barking hence the name Barking & Havering Athletics club. Only training and schools meetings are held there. So a different rule for Romford FC yet again.
