Coco vs Sussex

Recommended Posts

I know this has been discussed to death before but in case you're bored at work thinking about whether to go down the pub or not....

In the Surrey Mirror this week, in an article which mentions troublemakers using the fansfocus.com forum (yes, it got a mention!) to suggest that Redhill would be joining the Coco, also has a quote from Redhill president John Park:

"From the games I've seen, I don't think [the CoCo] is as strong a league [as the Sussex]. Merstham are obviously a very good side but they aren't that good considering how easily they won the division. We gave them a very good game in the Surrey Cup semi-final but are only mid-table in our league. .... There are some very poor sides in the [CoCo].

I haven't seen any Sussex league games for a few years now but I always thought the quality was poorer. Maybe they have improved over the last few years. Also, Merstham's defending in that Redhill game was just about the poorest I'd seen all season so not sure that one game should be used as a barometer. I think I've read that Sussex teams have done better over the years in teh Vase than CoCo teams so maybe there's some truth in what Park says.

What do you lot think?

We have played few Sussex teams this season in FA Competitions, Worthing were poor and would be bottom side in Coco, Three Bridges were a decent side, who probably deserved something from our game against them (but didnt get anything). And would prob be top 6 in Coco.

Not sure about Spartan Gussy, probably similar standard to us and Sussex, Ridgeons seems to be stronger and have lot more money floating about in it.

We've played Redhill twice in the last 2 seasons in the Surrey Senior Cup, last season we beat them 2-1 (I think) and this seasson lost 1-0 So I think Redhill are staying in the Sussex League and he's biggin it up.

Dont think you'll find much between the standards now, the Coco has raised their level in the last couple of years.

Anyone who knows football is that cup fixtures cannot be used to compare league standards. Just ask Cardiff, Barnsley, Havant, even as far back as Sutton to name a few.

In every league there are teams that could beat anyone and there are teams which are at times hopeless. Look at AFC Wallingford, a few years ago, they beat AFC Wimbledon to the CoCo title then the money man left and now they have finished bottom of the Hellenic Prem with about 6 points and over 100 goals against!

I knew a few of the guys at Beaconsfield SYCOB who won the Spartan and I reckon they would beat Merstham but again, it can't be judged over one game!

We beat Selsey, East Preston, Shoreham & Hassocks this season in various cups and found the standard not as good as coco
