St Georges Day !

Keep at it Official !

I think enough has been said on the matter. After all, Good Old Will Shakespeare had it right in Henry V. (My GCSE 'O' level !)

CRY GOD FOR HARRY etc etc.

I think everybody in this country who considers themself human, and subscribes to their own religion should spend some time studying and mixing with other religions. We could learn so much.

Although I don't now attend C of E church, I have attended various Catholic ceremonies, and would have no trouble attending Mosques, Synagogues etc etc.

Lets face it, Racism is fuelled by IGNORANCE !

One day i may live somewhere else but because you don't like everything about our place doesn't mean you should live somewhere else you can fight for a change.

I don't need to win friends i wont go around sucking up to people and agreeing with them just to get a few friend on a forum. my comment is true i dont support a monarchy. I love alot of things about OUR country. thats why i still live here.

Anyone can say thats the politicaly correct section of this and i could say thats the extreme right of that!

Racism is not to me a force of nature it is one of the worst things to ever be produced!

Just Because you were not offended by the joke doesn't mean other people if asked would not find it ofensive

I dont find yiddo ofensive but know many jews who do.

Hey Urchino - Steady !

Here's a point to ponder.

I was in Sainsbury's at the week-end (in Deepest rural stock-broker Surrey). They have employed two Muslim girls on the check-out. Both with their heads covered down to the neck. (I have NO problem with that !)

BUT - What surprised me was I watched them pass packets of Walls pork suasages through the scanner ! Weird ? or does the cellophane wrapper mean they are not handling pork.

Just for the record - MANY years ago, in my single days, one of my best mates was of the Jewish faith. We decided on a whim to drive early to the coast and get a ferry to the Isle of Wight. By the time we arrived in Ryde, we were starving and called into a cafe for brekky. I just fancied a couple of bacon butties and ordered. My mate said, "I'll have the same !" My face must have asked the unspoken question, cos he replied. "I won't eat bacon during passover, but for the rest of the year ? Why not ?"

Make you think, Urchino !

There's no bloody meat in sausages anyway. They're all full of crap!

Well this thread I started has gone full circle, so just to close, I'll say that yesterday I had to attend Epsom General Hospital to see my orthopeadic Surgeon.

Driving through Ashtead High Street, (between Leatherhead and Epsom, for those of you that don't know it, I spotted virtually every shop was displaying the red cross of St George Flag. I lost count after 35 flags which must have been up since St George's Day.

It looked bl**dy fantastic, bought a lump to my throat and made the hairs, (whats left), on the back of my neck stand up !!

I wont go steaming in too early, since I am just the new boy. But a very interesting thread. Obviously everybody is entitled to their opinions and that is one of the great things about living in the 'liberal free West'.

But one thing that strike me as odd, is those who are "proud to be English" and of the flag and monarchy. St George was actually from what is now Turkey, and he stands more for Christianity than England specifically. He is also the patron saint of other places, such as Catalonia for example.

And as for the monarchy. She's German, He's Greek. Something for all English to be proud of and look up to, eh?!

Quite right Invisible. St George was about as English as the assylum seekers, but then again, he is our Patron Saint after all !

Incidently, his execution was very gruesome too, by all acounts !!

Especially as the dragon was in fact seeking asylum from an opressive regime. As a free, fair and democratic knight, old Georgey should have been welcoming and protective of the poor old Dragon.

But a number of other knights and pre-canonised saints at the time werent so tolerant (some might say hypocrytical) and didnt fully understand the situation, and tarred the beast with the same brush as BOGUS asylum-seeking dragons.

George saw that siding with this particular group and repeating cliches from the press was far easier than actually thinking and forming independent opinion.

Which no doubt led to the unfortuante reptile's untimely demise.
