Reserves v Thamesmead

After Tuesdays exciting 2nd half v Rams an even younger side visited League winners Thamesmead. The pluses, lovely day, good pitch, tea in a mug and no entry charge. Minus, I had to run the line second half, please forgive as I do not know most of the players names, I`m sure someone will fill the gaps.

To get the disappoinment out of the way first, it was not Thamesmeads reserves that face Margate but an 11 of ex Mead players, older, wiser and out to win. Here we must remember that the oldest Gate players were 19, the youngest were 16 and, it was a team who had not really played together before.

Whistle blows and Gate take the game, 4 mins a free kick just inside Meads half, Elliott sends in a fine kick, forgive this but not sure whos head but it`s 1 nil to the Gate. Play evens out with both sides getting a couple of chances each. 30 mins sees Mead fire in from the edge of the pen area, hits a Gate player on the hand and a very harsh pen, 1-1. Gate rose to the challenge and a run from Chris laid the ball to Daz, a blistering shot found the net. At half time it was 1-2.

Second half saw the same, Mead playing good football but were snubbed out in the final move from a strong, defence. 10 mins in and a couple of changes saw Gates pace players arrive and their tempo rose but it was Mead who evened the score, a cross from the left a bit of luck and a driving shot from 10 feet for 2-2. Gate again rose and their pace, although centered in midfield look a real threat. However, once more Mead took their chance and caught Gates defence for 3-2. Margate were not done though and for much of the half played with flare but it seemed they could not put the killer pass in. Gate had a couple of near misses, post, and a couple wides as did Mead. With 10 mins to go Gate made their final sub, a good passing move and run gave Gate the chance to get the equalizer with 6 mins to go. from somewhere the ref found 4 extra mins but it was Gate who finished the stronger. 3-3 full time. It was a really good clean game and remembering that this was a side of youngsters who`d mostly not played together I could not fault them. Even though this was an older they knew what they were doing and wanted to win. Margate`s youngsters gave them a game and more often than not out player Meads oldies. Although disappointed not to meet Meads real reserves I`m sure they expected to walk over us. Well played.
