Happy St.Georges Day

Recommended Posts

I managed to get a text message read out on TalkSport on Sunday about St.Georges Day, I mentioned that St.Alban was Englands First (christian) Martyr (EFM he he) therefore June 22nd (St. Albans day) should be a national holiday and St.Alban our patron saint.

Still in the meantime, I'll celebrate this old fellow from Palestine!

Did you also know that St.George is also the patron saint of about 20+ countries, some as onscure as Libera and Estonia. In Spain (where he is also patron saint, it's a bank holiday)

St George was originally from Turkey - not Palestine.

Indeed, Happy St George's Day. It is a well known fact, of course, that George was only the second best drinking Saint - Alban being the first.

Look forward to seeing you later Thornsy, me old mucker! Thought we might give Robbo a bell this afternoon too, and get him along, a la J.K.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

In days gone by, our armies went into battle crying the warrior saint’s name for inspiration.

But now we usually let St George’s Day slip by with barely a whimper.

So The Sun urges everyone to proudly fly their flags and wear their English rose.

And last night stars from the world of showbiz and sport rallied to our call.

Former England soccer captain Alan Shearer, 32, said:

“Our country is more patriotic than ever. It would be fantastic if we all had the confidence to make St George’s Day a really meaningful day to celebrate.”

Rugby ace Lawrence Dallaglio shows his pride with a temporary tattoo of St George slaying the dragon on his back.

Lawrence, 30, said: “I am delighted to support The Sun campaign. English rugby embodies the values of St George’s Day — bravery, patriotism and commitment.”

Arsenal and England soccer star Ashley Cole, 22, said: “It would be great to see everyone celebrating.”

Cricket legend Mike Gatting, 45, agreed, adding: “St George represents everything good about our country.”

Catalina — star of ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here — plans to fly the flag from the Australian jungle.

The 28-year-old said: “National pride is especially important now after the courage Our Boys and Girls showed in Iraq.”

TV star and Sun film critic Johnny Vaughan said: “It’s a great way of showing the world how unified and proud we are as a country.

“England has such a dramatic and varied history — I can’t understand why we don’t want to celebrate it.”

Pop star Tony Hadley, 42, said: “I urge everyone to fly the St George’s flag in support of our great country.”

And Page 3 beauty Zoe, 22, from London — seen above — added: “I’ll be flying my flag and wearing my English rose with pride.”

And our own Jeremy Clarkson will also be celebrating. He said: “I will go to the pub and drink enormously.”

Just received this email...

To be honest, I think St George's Day is a bit like St Valentine's day - of very little meaning or significance, but used (often by people on the far right) to moan about unfairly treated the English are.

I think the Irish and St Patricks Day is all a bit silly as well, before you start accusing me of being racist towards the English!

Bah! Humbug! to you too. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
