Reserves 2 Ramsgate Reserves 2 Floodlite Cup

Our young guns came back from two down, to draw at Southwood against a much more experienced, physical, stronger Ramsgate side far different from the won they beat easily a few weeks back. It included Simon Pettit making a welcome return in his first full game for seven months. This draw meant Margate finished runners up in their group.

As early as the 8th minute, despite some good passing play by Margate before this, Ramsgate showed their intentions when Lee Minshull went on a run and his cross found Stuart King in the area who rifled it gleefully into the net. In the 15th minute Joe Taylor picked the ball up just outside the area, turned and found Ellitt Payne on the left but his well hit shot was straight at Shaun Alliston.

Aaron Quain then put over a good cross which Taylor rose to but his header went wide of the post. Minshull then found himself clear in the 23rd minute but Matt Bowles stood up well to him and made a point blank save. Quain then cut in from the left and his shot flashed across the goal wide of the right post. Olti Kecki then picked up the ball in midfield and found Taylor who saw his shot just go past the left post. King then scored his second in the 30th minute when the ball found him in the area, though he did look offside, and hit it past Bowles who had no chance.

Nick Moir went on a good run five minutes later and put over a dangerous cross but nobody could manage to get a contact. Then the Ramsgate number 11 hit a hard shot but Bowles got down well to save at the foot of the post. The last action of the hjalf saw Quain take a free kick on the right and, though he struck it well, Alliston saved comfortably.

In the 50th minute Mark Weatherley then made two substitutions which proved inspired as it changed the course of the game. Jimmy McClean replaced Taylor and Jason McAree came on for Quain. This gave Margate a lot of pace up front and four minutes later it nearly paid off when Moir hit a delightful ball through to McLean who saw keeper off his line but lobbed just wide. Ramsgate then had a free kick outside the area and their number 6 hit it well but saw the ball hit the outside of the right post.

In the 62nd minute Kenny Pratt had a chance but his well struck shot was straight at Alliston. Two minutes later McAree came through on the right and launched a fierce shot which Alliston just managed to push around his post. Weatherley then put up more pace up front with Chris Lewis coming on for Pratt in the 68th minute. A minute later Margate got back a deserved goal when the dangerous McAree came in from the right again and hit his shot well past Alliston giving him no chance.

Lewis then went on a run a minute later, found McAree but Alliston stood up well to him and saved his well hit shot. Robbie Summers, who had been controlling the midfield with Kecki, then found himself clear and with Alliston coming of his line, he lobbed him but saw a Ramsgate defender clear the ball off the line. Ramsgate immediately broke and King had a golden opportunity when through on goal but hit his shot high over the bar.

Mclean, who had caused problems with his pace, was found on the left hand side in 81st minute and looking up saw Alliston well of his line and lobbed him from the left but saw his effort go over the bar. Two minutes later Kecki hit a shot but this also went over the bar. Margate got a deserved equaliser in the 87th minute when Lewis went on a run on the right and his cross found Summers in the area, who was probably only up there as had lost his boot in the build up, and he fired home.

Team: Bowles, Moir, Payne, Harker, Wheatley, Eastwood, Kecki, Summers, Taylor (McLean 50th), Pratt (68th), Quain (McAree 50th). Subs Unused Sam Noble, Shannon McNamee

Must mention Wheatley at the back who, if he is only 16, looks a fine prospect. He certainly wasn't afraid to challenge hard for the ball and in fact knocked Minshull over in one challenge with is no mean feat. Also Jake Eastwood and Ryan Harker looked solid at back especially in the second half, keeping the Ramsgate chances to a minimum.

Last night we saw our future( mixed in with a little experience), providing of course, we do not throw it away, again. As a club lets not make that mistake a second time.

During this season you've seen 3 players in the reserves that come from the lower age group of this year's U18. - Matt Lamprell, Luke Wheatley and Joe Taylor.

Wait 'til next season when the rest of their teammates attempt to follow them into the reserves.

Look out for the names - Kane Hemmings, Darren Clapton, Nathan Scott, Steve Gibson, Daniel Gonzalez-Bello, Oliver Gray.

Not only will you be assessing their individual talents to realise they are equally good prospects, but you should also spot that they are a team - Who have played together since they were 8 years old

Well as I parked myself on a wooden bench I was informed that ramsgate were fielding mainly a team of first teamers. Intially i thought "GREAT" let's see how good these young lads of ours are. Sadly at the end of the 1st half and 2-0 down I was siding to the conclussion that they weren't yet good enough.

50 mins past and Jason McAree was warming up with another young lad (I now know to be called Jimmy McClean). It was time for both the EXHIBITION and FIREWORKS to begin. What was to follow was an absolute turnaround. Mark Weatherly summoned these to lads onto the field of play. Nick Moir was pushed up front (he'd been playing right wing back for the 1st half of the night).

McAree started off by winning the tackles deep in defence. This enabled our team to push further and further up the pitch. We were then winning nearly everything in the middle of the park with Olti and Summers. Most importantly though we now had 3 lads on the park with pace in abundace and glue on their boots to run at players. Moir, McAree and McClean. Next came the 4th player out of the exact same mould as the other 3 Chris Lewis (German. The jigsaw puzzle was now in place. 4 players ALL with out and out pace, skill in abundance and all track back and get tackles in before Ramsgate could get at our back line.

Moir, Lewis and McAree all then interplayed and seemed to know where each other were going to run all the time. McClean showed he was in the same mould as these other 3 VERY QUICK FOOTED players.

McAree (my MOTM) then scored a well deserved goal followed by Robbie (Ive lost my boot) Summers.

Surely was an exciting game with both sides playing football. For me the second half was outstanding each time we(Margate) went forward you felt that anything could happen.

(personal note) For one player who has spent the last 3 call ups to the res games as a bench warmer and little play over the last 2 months for u18s, only MFC know why he has only played 12 full games this season, you wonder what the season might have held had last years promise and goal scoring been acted upon by MFC. Last night we got an idea.

Strange that players from these lads age group have played and I mean played for Rams first team this season.

Great report(s).

I thought there were 2/3 floodlight games still to play ?Don't they play 10 games in that league ?

Endorse the comments.

Second half was like watching Brazil.

Bit of an eye opener really-i always thought pace in a player is overated-and i still think it is-but the difference comes when 4/5 players in the same side have all got pace and they fizz the ball around-thats what i saw last night in the second half-a team playing together and passing really well and using pace in about 4/5 different positions-thats what made the difference.

As others say-credit to Summers who controlled midfield superbly in second half; mention also to i think it was Macaree for one sublime lobbed pass half way through second half -and the back three-all played well second half-Harker,Eastwood and Wheatley i think;and yes-like others have suggested,at just 16 Wheatley relly does look outstanding-reasonable pace, some skill, tough tackling and he can even head the ball (well);and above all seems to be physically ready to make a step up aswell

Yep that's the pefect description for the last 35 mins of the game Michaelmichael. For all those who missed it was like watching Brazil.

Honestly it was that good. To think I nearly stayed away to watch Liv/Che on the tele.

Bloody glad I didn't because, as always, these young Margate lads didn't disappoint in excitement and skill.

I was well pleased to be present at such a game, full marks to Ramsgate too for their part in it. As Hippy says the pace was electric in the second half from the team.

Regarding the 10 games Michael I believe they have played 10 if you look at the tables, with Margate finishing a very creditable second.

Cheers Colin, nice of you to say so but feel most are still a bit too young at the moment but am sure some will come through the ranks like this season.
