Prediction League and Unofficial Site Emails

First of all I would like to apologise for what has happened.

As you have probably read elsewhere, the main server hard drive screwed up and most of the data is unretreivable.

I am sorry to say the email function has been completely lost and the service will stop for the foreseeable future. I really do apologise to whom it affects. Also to avoid the question "are any of my emails saved?", unless you used it with Outlook Express or another email client, as Barnaby has already said I'm afraid not. Everything is lost.

I am also sorry to admit that I never took any backups. As Red Neck says on the other thread this was amateurish of me, but as well as being an amateur web designer/coder (out of my depth as it is really, If I may add), I have been planning to move server for a while so have been putting off taking a whole database backup in favour of waiting until I moved server. Also my time commitments (the reason I made the automated prediction system in the first place) may have prevented me from doing so.

I will also add that I am extremely disappointed in my server and their inability also to keep backups of their clients data. I am going to move server tomorrow hopefully before I leave before Forest Green (and publish what is left of my non database work!) so hopefully this won't happen again.

As for the prediction league, the entire database has been lost. All user accounts, all predictions made etc.. However, I believe I should be able to get the latest table up (before the Altrincham game), but not the Altrincham predictions.

Therefore this is what I propose:

We void the Alty predictions as if the game didn't happen, and continue to predict starting again today with Forest Green. Predictions to be emailed to me at ian.d [at] msn.com, or PM'ed to me on here (please include your username). I will also publish everyone's predictions after the game (so this method does require a bit of trust which I hope you still have in me after this incident!), and will then update the table manually.

Then for next season I will rebuild the database and we can start all over again properly!

Is everyone/the majority happy with this or does everyone think I should hang up the gloves on it for this season? Opinions please.

Once again sincere apologies for this pulava.

Ian Dickety.

P.S. Feel free to email me (address above) or PM me with any queries or questions.

Shame mate. :-(

If anything, you have learnt the backup before making changes lesson.

It's happened to all us at one time or other but only once!

Good luck with the DB build. At least you have the whole of the close season to sort it.

Hi Ian

Backup , backup the backup , back that up and put it somewhere no one will go (priestfield next season maybe) and then back it up again.

If yo uneed any help mate , just PM me and I will try and help.

I learnt a lot from Barnaby and recently moved the Trust site to a new host.

If you are rebuilding from scratch , I have shed laods of Templates for Joomla and know that system fairly well now.

Speak to you this evening

Brian

Cheers guys, to let you know I have already bought hardware for backing up in future! Lesson learnt, don't you worry!

Also, an update on the email front....

As the service will be discontinuing (for now, atleast - while I sort everything else out), if you need your email account to change your email address (sounds silly but it's true - you need to do this for facebook) let me know.

I can recreate an account with the same username as before, therefore picking up any mail to this address. Just PM me and I can sort you out.

Regards

Ian

I am always willing to put your site(s) onto one of my servers without charge. My servers are either RAID 5 or Raid 10 (4 hard drives) and are backed up every 6 hours at the most.

All I ask for in return is a banner ad.
