HORSHAM V BTFC SCORES UPDATE

Recommended Posts

Back online today and whoooshhhh frown I was one of those who could not make the game. That is 3 games missed this league campaign. Funnily enough same amount missed as last season, but that is nothing to do with the point. I think it fair to say that 95% of Town fans do not/cannot go to every game, and the hard core of away support do their best. I do not think i have seen many overly critical postings on here from anyone about our teams performances so am a little mystified . Those same fans that were not present on Saturday are more than likely the same fans who were at Wealdstone/Staines etc etc in freezing cold conditions in midweek. We all say and do things in a heat of the moment, and how many times have we "ALL" said well i aint going next week ! more in jest than anything smile That is the voice of a fan - but lets face it 95% of the time the same faces stand guard the following week. That will be the same with fans of any football club, i bet my mortgage.

Anyway, like i said not everyone can make every game but that does not mean we do not care. Just for info(not that this should be needed) i was with my son who has just been given a new football contract which he only knew about on Wednesday last week. A parent had to be there, and even if we were at home i would not have been there as it was an afternoon thing.

I was ecstatic about our result and was really pleased for Billy as i did not know about the shuffling around that needed to be done so it must have made the result even more special for the lads. So well done lads.

Perhaps I didn't make my point clearly, it was, we had a significantly lower number of fans at both the Tonbridge, and Horsham games than would normally be expected. A good number of absentees missed the game through choice, and I accept that no one HAS to attend.

But, some of the fans who did not attended one, or both games because they couldn't be assed, have been critical at times during this season, and made such comments along the lines of ,a lack of effort, not enough passion, didn't try hard enough etc.

Those people are of course quite entitled to make such comments, I have never said the shouldn't or couldn't.

But I to am also entitled to voice my opinion, and that is 'they' imo, are guilty of the faults that they have levied at others.

JL, come on, where did I say that all the apples were no good?

Your last sentence could generate a whole debate on its own, but before I make a comment I need to know what would you accept as "reasonably well"

Your stat re home game averages is interesting because the gates have been pretty consistent over the seasons, as has our league form.

That stat tells me that if we are to progress, then we need to generate more income. I think Delboy is right, the loss of Chelmsford and one other will not make any significant difference because some of teams that are going down were poorly supported compared to those coming in.

It's the people that do "care" that take offense. I don't think that any offense was meant to those that do "care" and support the club on a regular basis but there are those that are vocal when things don't go as they should...

A level headed view is that you can't please all of the people all the time...but we do try...

And if we are in a play off place or (God forbid) chasing the title next season, everything will be forgotten (except for those where "moaning" is a career option).

Ok thanks jl

surpass this seasons numbers by occupying or seriously challenging for a play off place.

This is a genuine question and I don't mind it being debated on here, more the merrier in fact because its an area that I think we need to improve on

Why, iyo, would next seasons gates be better than last season, a season in which we did occupy a play off spot, and we were top with about 4/5 games left.

Because this season 07/08 we have managed to more or less mirror the previous season's (play-off making) average 06/07 and I think most people would accept that this season has been less successful - certainly in the league. So it could be argued that our core support must have grown for the 06/07 levels of support to have been sustained this season.

I believe that it's well established that many "new" supporters initially are attracted by the thought of supporting a winning side and that if the team does "reasonably well" we'll attract new supporters particularly if we can get some momentum going.

So the long and short of it is that I think our core support has increased over the last couple of seasons.

Core support...don't start with the apples again grin

I agree, growing our core support is key to a sustainable future and we have done well with that, but that core support hasn't as yet, had any significant impact on the overall supporting figures.

Your average support fig for this season, does that include Swansea?

This season's average is for league games only (10 976/20 games)

04/05 finish 2nd average 524
05/06 finish (a close-up) 7th average 542
06/07 finish 4th average 558

07/08 finish 9th ish average 549ish (so this average would incorporate a "weak" season and a 12.5 pc price increase)

Had we made the play-offs this season then looking at the trends we could reasonably have expected to average 575 this season and that's the sort of average I believe we can achieve next season if we do "reasonably well". I'm not sure whether that would be "significant" or not, but unless one throws a "King-sized" whistle wallet at it, exponential year on year growth is unlikely unless the team turns in a very strong performance.

The point I was initially trying to make was that I wouldn't get too down about a couple of events that may have disappointed (and in my opinion had their own specific circumstances) when the bigger picture in my view still looks quite rosy. In fact I might even raise a glass to that on Saturday.

Toodle pip grin

Thanks for that JL. I knew what point you were originally making, apples or no apples.

I just wanted to air and expand the gate topic with the hope that it may spark a few people into doing there own little bit to increase our following next season.

If everyone brought along one person each game we could fill a stadium the size of Tottenham before the end of September yay

As an occaisional visitor to NL during the season, I would have to agree with John. The average gate at NL is still pretty good, regardless of banter. One of the hardest things Chelmo have is that of 'awareness' that the club is even back in the Borough. (I appreciate that is not the case with you - but still about getting fans through the gate.)

Although a point of amusement, the 'parrot' is always in Chelmsford town center during the morning of home match days, giving out leaflets etc. This has no doubt assisted our gates. Could the blues consider something similar to that in Billericay High street? Even if not on that day, future visits maybe considered? Many Chelmo fans this season have come along because the younger members of the family suggested/asked to go....

Failing that I remember Gary and others in the High street with a table and leaflets/scarfs etc. How about a few others doing this on the morning of the match? Billericay High street is an ideal concentrated area to get into 'em.

Once you get them into the routine on a Saturday, they become regular fans etc.......just a thought!

I'm with you BB, none of this warm beer crap......

If just a couple of games are picked and the high Street is covered the mornings of those games, it would be interesting to see the effect it would have. It would of course mean a couple of chappies giving a couple of hours up prior to a game.....Billericay High Street is ideal for this as NL is so close, where as we have a massive problem in this area of being close etc...
