First team match abandoned due to serious injury

Epsom & Ewell's home match against Egham Town was abandoned after 73 minutes this evening due to a serious injury to Egham's centre back Mark Scotchford with the visitors leading 2-1 at the time. Egham took a 10th minute lead when the Epsom defence failed to respond to a parried save by Paul Borg allowing an easy conversion from 10 yards out. Egham doubled their lead on 20 minutes, Jordan Ellis committing a foul that saw the referee pointing to the spot with Paul Borg being sent the wrong way. Epsom & Ewell managed to get a goal back on 35 minutes when Robbie Burns was fouled in the Egham box, Kyle Hough converting from the spot. The score line remained the same into the second half and until Mark Scotchford went into a diving tackle on 73 minutes but came off seriously injured with a very bad leg injury that meant he was unable to be moved to allow him to be stretchered off the pitch which required the ambulance to drive on the pitch to assist the player. After 35 minutes delay awaiting for the arrival of an available ambulance and after consulting with the paramedics of the timeframe to remove the player and ambulance from the playing surface and taking into account the time remaining to be played, the referee decided to abandon the match. Everybody at Epsom & Ewell F.C. wishes Mark & his family all the best for a speedy recovery.

It was difficult to see exactly what had happened but it didn't look like a contact injury, more of the way he fell and looked like he buckled slightly at his knee.

The poor lad was lying there and just didn't move so you could tell it was bad cos there was none of the rolling around that normally goes with an 'injury'.

As for the quote regarding an 'available ambulance' the emergency services took no longer than 5 mins to arrive from when the call was made. applause

One of the Egham players informed me that he had done something serious to the same knee before and he was always playing with a 'Terry Butcher' style headband (altho it resembled more like one that Pat Cash would wear) to protect 8 stitches in his head. I personally wish him a speedy recovery
