Those who dislike pedantic smartarsery might want to look away now.

CT, if you are going to show off your knowledge of parts of speech, at least get the terminology right: "And" & "But" are not prepositions; they are conjunctions.

Prepositions

Conjunctions

As you can see, those definitions don't really explain the difference that well, because people who worship grammatical terms don't really understand how language actually works. Basically, conjunctions, like "and" and "but" join words or phrases, whereas conjunctions show some sort of positional relationship in time or place between words or phrases.

Language is too vibrant & flexible to be tied into a strait-jacket of rigid terminology. Most prepositions can also be adverbs; eg "He ran onto the pitch." "Onto" can be seen as a preposition showing the relationship between "He ran " & "the pitch." It can also be seen as an adverb, giving more detail to the verb jumped.

Oh - and I also think you meant "apparatchiks" rather than "apparachniks."

Zzzzzz!

Asleep yet? You should be!

Love it! I used to have a teacher who'd pretend any mistakes were deliberate to see if we were still awake. Stupid old duffer.

Well spotted. I'd obviously bored myself into a stupor too. The 2nd "conjunctions" should have read "prepositions."

2 merits - minus 1 for spelling "surely" incorrectly.

Err - sorry ... got you again here !
This spelling variation , which you will see an awful lot on this forum , comes from us avid comedy film buffs borroing from the legend that is Leslie Nielsen ( Airplane , Naked Gun etc )
.... the quote is " But surely ... " to which he replies " Don't call me Shirley "
PS Watch out for lots and lots and lots of Monty Python too
