Match report of the game. By JONATHAN CLEGG

TEENAGE goalkeeper Ashley King was the hero as Bethnal Green United beat Middlesex County League rivals Sutton Common Rovers in a dramatic penalty shoot-out last weekend to lift the Alec Smith Premier Division Cup.

Sixteen-year-old King saved THREE Sutton spot-kicks before Justin Weatherman blasted home the winning effort to seal a 4-3 shootout victory after the match ended level after extra-time.

Weatherman's early goal had given Bethnal Green a half-time lead but Sutton equalised after the break, and despite dominating both periods of extra-time, United were forced to go through the agony of penalties before clinching the cup.

Bethnal Green celebrated the triumph in front of almost 300 fans at Yeading's Warren Ground on Saturday night and manager Justin Gardner admitted that lifting the trophy was the highlight of his tenure at the club.

"It's the biggest achievement of my managerial career," said Gardner. "To win the cup in front of so many supporters is magnificent."

Bethnal Green had lost both previous meetings with Sutton this season, but entered the game on a five-match unbeaten streak, and Gardner was confident that a different venue would bring change in fortune for his team.

"I thought that the conditions at Yeading would suit us," said the Bethnal Green boss.

"On a big pitch we are a match for anyone because we try to play football."

United rewarded the manager's faith with a bright start, surging in front in the tenth minute.

Slick passing between Weatherman and Nathan Mulgrave created a shooting chance for Daniel Sabaroche, and when his shot was saved the in-form Weatherman was on hand to smash home the rebound.

United could have doubled the lead midway through the half but Mulgrave's dangerous cross eluded his team-mates, and Bethnal Green were indebted to King for preserving their advantage with a flying save minutes before half-time.

Bethnal Green continued to create chances after the interval. Sabaroche crashed a wicked free-kick against the crossbar and in the scramble that followed Wesley Erskine's low shot was cleared off the goal-line.

But a defensive mix-up allowed Sutton to level the scores with 20 minutes remaining when Bethnal Green failed to clear their lines and a collision between King and two defenders gift-wrapped a chance for their opponents.

Sutton dominated the rest of normal time but Bethnal Green held firm and with substitutes Junior Dwyer and Shane Joseph on to freshen things up, they took control of extra-time.

Despite bossing the additional period, Bethnal Green were unable to create a clear-cut chance until the final minute of extra-time when Kada Jama raced clear, only to smash his effort straight at the Sutton goalkeeper and condemn the tie to a penalty shootout.

"In the last 15 minutes we were all over them and they were hanging on for penalties - I thought we'd blown our chance," Gardner said.

Both teams scored first three penalties before King rose to the occasion.

The teenager blocked back-to-back Sutton efforts, and when Ibrahim Konate and Jama fluffed chances to seal the outcome for Bethnal Green, King produced another athletic save to tip the first sudden-death spot-kick onto the crossbar and over.

Bethnal Green were not about to waste a third opportunity to clinch the cup and Weatherman tucked home his penalty to decide the shootout.

Bethnal Green chairman Nurdul Hoque said: "I would like to thank Zahir Khan, Community Affairs Manager of Canary Wharf Group, for their sponsorship and continued support for Bethnal Green United.

"I would also like to acknowledge the support of other businesses in the local area, in particular Globe Letting, DVS Motorz, Citiagent and Express Link.

"I would also like to sincerely thank Derek Bennett, Senior Football Development Officer for Tower Hamlets Council, for attending the final and for his ongoing support.

You're obviously not English then, or born and bred in the East End, if you haven't seen the film Oliver Twist. I'm surprised you're as thick as thieves with Eddie Mee, how come you know him so well.

GAFFA1 - That's an interesting comment, so are both your parents originally British citizens then or did one or both of them move to London from another Country, such as Cyprus or Greece for example, and then take up British citizenship, I hope you don't mind me asking.
