Aldershot fans?

Recommended Posts

The tone of the day was set up beautifully for me when I had to change trains at Ash. The two teenage girls standing next to me were almost angelic in their use of the "F" word, compared to the Tennants Extra swigging Chav, who was advising his girlfriend via his mobile, that he was "going to come 'round and slit her throat and didn't care if he got life for it". By this time I was joined by three shaven headed boneheads who threatended to "do over" the aforementioned Chav with the relationship issue, if he didn't shut up!

When I reached Aldershot I had to pinch myself that I hadn't arrived Sam Tyler like into an episode of Life on Mars.

In trying to find a suitable / safe hostelery, I was entertained on route by any number of hoodies and teenagers spaced out on whatever the favourite local substance is. The shops are full of class too, Cheque Exchange, Sex Shops (with concessions for the military) and downtrodden supermarkets populated by people in shell suits.

I did take my life into my hands by going to a cash machine, but the first two I found had been smashed.

After the game we were given a cheery wave by the lads outside the pub and then witnessed the old chav like geezer looking to take on all comers.

Further on, I was nearly run over by a local taxi driver when I was halfway across a zebra crossing, at which point he lowered his window so as to enagage in an exchange of pleasantaries.

Then came the station and a visit from a group of local "hards", including the old Chav who must have had about 20 years on the rest. He was about to lay into the nearest person to him when he was accosted and transported off by the police, with all his "mates" chanting "Roy is a legend" as he departed the scene.

By now the police had it pretty much under control despite the macho posturing of Aldershot's finest.

On the way back I had to spend another 30 minutes at Ash waiting for my connection and I was soon joined by a guy, who I guess was in his early fourties, with three large tribal markings tattooed down the side of his right cheek....sort of a fitting end to, what was in all other respects, a perfect day!

I was sitting in the section of the South Stand reserved for away supporters. Above and behind us was what I can only assume was some kind of down market hospitality suite. Inside were the Hampshire equivalent of Essex Boy city workers, most of whom were totally sh*tfaced by the time I took my seat & who seemed to have access to alcohol throughout the match.

Some of them shouted pretty abusive stuff, at times targeting some of our women supporters which I felt was particularly gallant of them. At the end, beer was thrown down, but the thrower was so p*ssed it missed everybody & landed in the gangway. One shaven/bald headed bloke was leaning through an open window trying to sing something utterly indecipherable, as we all went mental at the end. To be honest, at least 2 of them should have been thrown out long before the final whistle, whether they'd paid good money for the box or not.

Didn't spoil my day in the least, though, nor that of those behind me, I hope, who were closer to them. I cannot remember ever going quite so barmy as when Bostwick's goal went in. What a day & what a team effort! Everybody played their part, but if the Pope had half an idea what he was doing, Sacha & Paul M would be called to Rome to be canonized after that performance.

As you can probably tell, I am an Aldershot fan.

Firstly, very well done. You deserve to go to Wembley completely (i.e. we don't). Although I was disappointed yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle - you could easily have stuck 10 men behind the ball from the kick off, but you didn't, and you deserve enormous credit for that.

Secondly, we have a quite appauling minority of fans. The chavs we get not only bugger you off, evidently, but they annoy us too. Those scrotes that you encountered aren't the only problem fans either, it is a significant minority which are pricks and they cannot be ignored.

We have to be rid of them, becuase they can act in relative safety in this league, as most away supports are small. But what if we have to play Millwall next year if we do achieve promotion? They'll bring an away support akin to yours yesterday, and they won't be as amiable as you. The reputation we have could make all of us targets.

Thirdly, your fans. Don't listen to those on the Aldershot board who would do you down/call you all part-timers. I was in the North Stand sat just behind our dugout and from where I was sitting you provided great support. (Thanks for coming too as it improved our finances no end). Those that call you poor fans, frankly, are either young and foolish or on the wind-up, and they are not the views of the majority of Aldershot fans. Their arrogance is not something reflected among all of us, I hope. You were a credit to your club.

Good luck at Wembley - enjoy it and cherish the memories. I genuinely hope you win the Trophy, and if you play as well as you did in the 180 minutes, I think you could well do.
