Interesting point

Chester are obviously making a mess of things late on this season but they are already gauranteed to be in play offs, therefore can rest their best players and experiment. This has obviously caused us a problem with them losing an unlikely game at F Boro last night!

Point -

Should play offs exist!! - I still think they should obviously but how unfortunate is it for us that anyone playing Chester etc now has a possible victory whereas we played them under full strength! anyway.....

The real answer is no - they shouldn't.
The reason being I am of firm belief that if you finished 2nd,
you could be 20 points in front of 3rd place and still your whole season boils down to play-offs.

It's wrong and if it was automatic promotion for 2nd place there would be a 4 way battle right now and teams like Chester wouldn't be fart-arsing about and giving other teams an unfair advantage compared to us.

Or is it a case of the conference 'looking after their own'?

I've always agreed in principle- Play offs are not fair on the 2nd placed side. That said they do create added excitement at the end of season.

But of course, as demonstrated last night, the real issue is about clubs fielding less strong sides (although I am not suggesting this was the case yesterday) in order to protect players prior to play offs.

It was suggested to me last night that another club were prepared to 'wrap players in cotton wool' (although again is only hearsay!)

Obviously rules would be in place to deal with Clubs fielding weak sides, but this would not help Clubs such as ours who suffer the disadvantage of other clubs picking up points they may not necessarily have gained.

That said Farnborough probably deserved their win last night and we wouldn't be in this position if we had picked up more points in previous games!

Of course win all 3 and we stay up! simple really (not!)

I agree that the fact play-off places have already been secured can lead some odd results, such as Burton and F'boro beating Chester, but at the end of the day regardles of how well or bad those around us are doing, it is still down to our lads to go out get three points - it is in their hands and whatever Woking, or Leigh etc do we contol our own destiny. And in all fairness our second half performance against an unimpressive Chester the other week didn't do us any favours! smirk.gif
