Is it worth it?

Recommended Posts

After last weeks discussion on how much money goes to the club from fans, it got me thinking how much it costs fans to follow the club for a year.

I have done my sums on me seeing 23 home games and 18 away games this season (that is predicting those still to come)

With gate money, travel(over 2000 miles at 30p per mile), food & donations to the club it comes to over £1300 for this season.

After todays game it makes me question the value of what I am seeing, and that could be said for the whole season.

It is not that I am paying to watch the games in luxury, as the accomedation at grounds is spartan to say the least and that includes Holloway park.

We are now back into the relegation battle as those who wear the badge have difficulty translating what it says into practice, and I dread to think what the standard of football and the grounds will be like if we drop another level!

I know of some like Anderew Strathdee who now support Burnham - but that is just treason.

As in the words of Roy Merryweather "matters on the field dont matter this season" - well Roy that just goes to show how little you know about football and its fans!

The option of spending my Saturday afternoons doing something more rewarding, more comfortable and less costly is now becoming a serious thought and I will be taking the next week to look at the options.

After watching crap like yesterday, i question my sanity about travelling to watch the team. I dread to think what it costs me coming from Brighton every week (and it would be a lot more if Gary didn't pick me up from various train stations).

Thankfully (amazingly!) we still have a big enough fan base to make social side enjoyable - it's just unfortunate that over the past few seasons 90 minutes of football often spoil a good day out!

But then, when i get really pissed off and think about missing a game, we beat Fleet, we battle against Farnborough; the games against Wimbledon etc.

It is really important we get off the field matters sorted and it is an exciting time for the club,; i believe we haven't been run so professionally in years. Of course we need to stay up; and if we get a new ground, just think if you stay supporting Slough, you can tell all the hundreds of new fans that you were there when we were [****!!****]!

of course it's worth it...no question about it x you monet by 3 for me..and its still woth it... The club is about people and supporters/players ..seeing your friends and having a pint or two with friends...banter ..seeing parts of the country side that you would never dream to of going too..

a price that you could never put on ..the football is important too of course ..its what brings us together..in the first place ..but now as Warren has stated , we have to stick together and hope our team can re address the task in hand and commit themselves in this do or die relegation battle..

we are the rebels... see you all saturday ...

Yes i agree at times it is hard to understand why we spend each Saturday and sometimes midweek going to support OUR TEAM mostly Loose but sometimes win. Well i think it is in that one word SUPPORT you follow your team through the good and bad times. Things have not looked as good for a long time as they do at present (off the field). so lets stop talking about jumping ship and be more possitive. this will have a far better responce from all concerned rather than nearly allways negative comments. Last year we had amazing support when we knew we were relagated. This year we are still in with a fighting chance to stay up (that is what we all want yeah)so lets stay togeather and behind the team even when it is hard. It WILL turn around. there is also the social side of the club. We have a great fan base like a extended family we all know each other if only to say hi, have a drink or 2,have a laugh, and are respected by nearly all the clubs we visit. Lyn and i and i am sure i speak for Aiden and Sue will for one group stay supporting SLOUGH TOWN FC as this is the club that we chose and love and follow through thick and thin.

Phil & Lyn

allways flying the flags

there are obviously different types of supporters, but even the die-hards at the end of the day are looking for that bit of glory, supporters loyalty will be tested once again if we get relegated to the spartan(many people on here have stated that their support would end if that happenned)i agree now with the poster on here who said we will get relegated as our run is poor, bracknell only have to win one of thir games in hand and we are in the bottom 2 and bracknell will probably escape.

sloughs support has dropped off 20% this season and would in my estimate be as low as 150 next season a tenth of what we were during the conference,we have to sustain ourselves for two seasons until/if we move to arbour vale.

so how many of us will be at holloways park if we get relegated.

i would still come but i wouldnt change my plans to turn up like i have done the last few seasons. its a shame, but you cant blame the casual fans or the fans who want the team to be what they once was, for maybe not wanting to come back next season should we go down

It isn't looking good, but as the Fleet and Farnborough results show we can pull off shock results when we get stuck in!

And as Betsy's interview said, the team love the support they get and helps to spur them on. I know its hard to sometimes get motivated but we need to all shout our big gobs off for the last few games.

Well, you are welcome to your opinion, Staines Rebel, but a traitor is somebody who does deliberate damage to the cause and I have not nor sought to damage Slough Town at all.

I have actually lived in Burnham for a long long time - and before that I lived in Hillingdon and supported the old Hillingdon team which merged with Burnham, so you could say that the time I came along to Slough, I was letting Burnham down.

Anyway I have become increasingly involved in Burnham Village affairs and the Football Club have been very supportive of many of the things that I am doing. In addition they have a lot of links with youth football, which is very important for the community, so I am sorry, but I think this is a matter of priorities - I think it important to support what they are doing as well as supporting the team, many of whom come from Burnham.

I have chosen to support the club where I live for what I think are good reasons. I know there are a lot of Slough Supporters who once supported other clubs, Hillingdon being one of them, so if you are going to call them all traitors, be careful, you might lose a lot more! Come to think of it why aren't you supporting Staines? Aren't you a traitor by that definition?

At the Burnham game tonight there were some Slough Supporters there - are they traitors as well, spending money to watch another club?

There will always be people whose decision as to which team they support will depend many things- I have seen people who used to support Slough come on this Forum to wish the Club well, as I do, but now live somewhere else and feel the need to support their local team - and non league football needs all the fans it can get.

Best of luck to Slough - I don't think you will go down and if all goes well in the future, you will get promoted back to the Conference and then you can look down your noses again at all those teams plying their trade in what I think someone at Slough disparagingly called Village Football. Village football it may be, but over twenty teams from babies to adults is a pretty good contribution to the community, in my book.

yes but that is no why you really left supporting the Rebels..you were commenting plenty before and after you left about the inablities of the management....all recorded on this message board...Andrew good that you have returned to the fold to do your best for your village...

and real non league supporters never look down their noses at other fortunes of other teams , rivalry yes...good luck to all our friends at Burnham and all our local teams...

we have got lots to do including staying in this league, and we never take things for granted we have to win games...

and of course its worth it...slough is all about the people and the extended family ...and supporting the the rebels..at home and on the road..which we have the finest...in this league by far...

up the rebels

Problem at the moment is the inconsistency of the team. After the Fleet game i was really looking forward to going to Godalming, but then paying £7 to watch was in effect no better than park football is bound to make supporters wonder. However, saying that our destiny is in our own hands. A win over Paulton and a defeat for Bracknell at home to Farnborough means our advantage is restored.
