Dover identifies Bourne talent

CANVEY Island FC's Chris Bourne made a big hit on his international debut for Guyana.

Left-sided full-back or midfielder Bourne, on Southend United's books as a youngster, came off the bench on the hour as Guyana - nicknamed the Golden Jaguars - came from behind to pull off a 2-1 win over Cuba in the first of five friendly games.

These are being used as build-up for Guyana's World Cup qualifying campaign which starts in June.

The Gulls' player, an outstanding County standard athlete earlier in his career, earned praise from coach Wayne Dover for the standard of crosses he provided which, he said, had been "executed with great efficiency".

He added: "I was impressed with the indecisiveness Bourne seemed to impose on the Cuban goalkeeper every time he launched one of his crosses.

"It was unfortunate that at least one of them was not successful in setting up a goal."

Bourne is part of the Guyana squad along with Island colleague Clydie Roberts, who plays in midfield.

Two other Canvey players, Ryan Edgar and Danny Francis, have recently returned after helping Dominica start their World Cup campaign with a draw against Barbados.

Bourne himself admitted to being "delighted" with his first foray into the international arena, which took place on a soggy rain-soaked pitch at the Mackenzie Sports Ground, Linden.

Immediately afterwards the Canvey duo were moving on to the GCC Ground at Bourda in sunnier Georgetown where conditions were expected to be improved for the second meeting with Cuba.

Yordonis Castro gave Cuba a sixth-minute lead which Anthony "Awo" Abrams levelled after 33 minutes with Konata Manning grabbing what proved to be the winner on the stroke of half-time.
