Great commentry from Chas and Bill

Recommended Posts

I am sure it was good comments.

However,I cannot judge for myself since it seems impossible to listen in outside UK.

Why does the FA prevent that?

I mean..never mind me..but there are true fans to english clubs all over the world nowadays.

AFF in the US for example, another one in Singapore and so on.

I know logic might not come into this as FA indeed has appointed chaps like Keegan and Umbrella..but it still seems a rather stupid move to block listening from abroad..even by FA:s standards.

This from the BBC site. I have emailed them asking for clarification, (maybe Lord C can help?) as the statement refers specifically to Premiership matches, not NL:

"However, please note that we occasionally have to restrict access to some programmes to UK users only for rights reasons. For instance, we only have the rights to broadcast certain sporting events in the UK - not worldwide. These include Premiership football matches and Formula One Grand Prix. So you can listen on BBC Radio 5 Live on 909 & 693AM and on digital radio or digital TV, but not over the internet because this can be accessed across the globe. We apologise for any inconvenience."

Taken from the Competition Rules on theFAWebsite :-

(g) In relation to each match in the Competition, The Association shall itself be exclusively entitled throughout the world, or to grant to or otherwise authorise others:

(ii) on a live or delayed basis to broadcast or to otherwise transmit the Copyright Materials (or audio) by way of radio broadcast or internet, or other on-line media or similar technology (now known or hereinafter devised) (“the Radio Rights”).

So the FA own the copyright and are guarding it closely. No surprise there, that is quite normal. However, I guess they would want to charge higher licence fees for broadcasting overseas and there is really little incentive for BBC Radio Kent to pay those additional fees, hence the restricted coverage. This is purely guesswork, so I may be wrong, but that is how IP normally works.

Mr. Mushroom, I think you're exactly right. There typically wouldn't be much international interest in the FA Trophy, so no one negotiated broadcast rights with the FA.

I'm torn. I'd like to see that change for next season, but then again, I hope next season that the Fleet aren't in that competition.

If we are still involved in the Trophy next season its one of the competitions that Setanta are due to provide more coverage of (I'd have to say its about time as its Non League's premier cup comp & I guess Carlsberg must wonder what they've achieved from their sponsorship up to now with only the final getting any airtime)

I thought it was proxy related - my firms IT is run through HQ in Germany, so we cannot get Beeb content in work - although we are in UK!

Surely a UK based (not anonymous) proxy would overcome this?

Who knows - except it can't be worth all the hassle just to prevent some desperate footy fan living abroad from tuning into the FA Trophy!
