Worrying Trend

It concerns me that there seems to be a growing effort on here to silence criticism of the players from the terraces.

I'm not talking about the Standen incident, and i obviously dont condone personal abuse but lets not stifle our passion.

Some on here seem to be suggesting that if you shout at the players then you're not a real fan, what utter rubbish!

I pay good money to watch the gate and if i dont think a player is good enough or even worse not putting in 100% then i'll certainly let him know. They are paid well to entertain us and perform for the club.

I've supported the gate for a long time and will continue to do so, passionate critisism included.

I think you're right - "personal abuse" is the key and once the line is crossed then it's a different issue although even then players have to be responsible enough not to take things into their own hands. They have to be bigger than the abuser, if you like. But you take the passion out of the game and what's left?

Apparently so Chris, I believe from next season the FA will be introducing new regs and guidelines on it. Unfortunately I do not have any further info - might be worth a trip to the FA website?!

Sweet FA Move To Stop Swearing At Football

roy-of-the-rovers.jpg“RED card for the curse of football,” says the Mail, noticing a plan to curtail swearing on the pitch.

The scheme, pioneered by the Football Association, a famous up-to-the-minute body, is for a “zero tolerance” policy to cursing on the field of play.

Swear at the referee and you’re off. Better still, swear at all and you can wash your mouth out in the early bath.

Says an FA spokesman: “People in general need to have a lot more respect for one another. By fostering a new approach on the pitch not only do we hope to clean up the game but hopefully some of it will rub off into everyday life.”

The FA enjoys thinking of itself as setting the standards by which we all live, rather than presiding over a game that reflects the greater society.

So for next season 20 league, represented by 350 teams, will trail the scheme.

All that remains to be decided is that constitutes a swear word? If blasphemy a red card offence. What about swearing in a foreign language? And do you have ejaculate the words or is mouthing them enough?

All rather strange, turn up at a youth game and you might now be provided with colourful language, mostly from the touchline. It seems to take a few seasons at a higher youth level before the players join in. Reserve game are the best, and in our teams defence MFC are the most restrained, we have an empty ground so every word can be heard. Reserves v Holmesdale is a classic. Having spent years videoing games and providing them for managers or others I have to put a statement on the DVD and case, "contains bad language". Sometimes I have to blank out some verbals because it is too bad or out and out offensive. Many years ago, before the FAs GOAL initiative and I could film youth games, an incident happened that went to the FA I had it on tape but was not allowed to provided it, there was no reason given why.Having spent the last 6 years running the line I`ve taken my share of abuse and threats and although I try not to let it get to me sometimes it does, how oficials at this level put up with it is beyond me.

To try to stop swearing is a non-starter unless everone is prepared to see games called off after 15 mins because 8 players have been red carded. Surely clubs have to make the first move, it seems easy to spot the worst offenders and deal with them, other will soon get the message. Of course as we read, it`s a two way thing. How many time can we hear on the tv colourful chants. Personally I`ve heard the worst comments coming from spectators. Was it not a few years ago when this was highlighted on tv when a spectator was shouting abuse with his very young son in his arms.

Well that`s my moad over. Sorry
