SACKED

Report by Craig Tucker

Margate have sacked midfielder Dean Standen after he pulled off his shirt and jumped a barrier to confront a fan who’d been abusing him.

Chairman Malcolm Rowlett says he was horrified to learn of the incident which happened at the end of Blues’ 3-1 victory over Staines on Saturday.

The board and manager Robin Trott agreed Standen had no future at the club.

Rowlett Said: “We’ve terminated Standen’s contract which had until the end of the season to run.

“Obviously we can’t condone that kind of behaviour at the end of a match.

“You can’t react like that – it goes totally against all the rules and regulations.

“At the same time the board won’t put up with any abusive language on the terraces either.

“We’re a family club and we don’t want that sort of thing going on.

“We will be taking action against the supporter concerned but we need all the facts first because there are conflicting stories.

Standen had been one of Margate’s best players this season but carries a reputation as a hothead. Rowlett says the club have tried to help him calm down but there was no way back after Saturday.

The Blues’ chairman said: “The lad has a short fuse and we’ve tried to deal with that in the past, although when he’s not playing football he’s a really nice bloke.

“We had a board meeting and had to act quickly.

“We’ve terminated his contract by letter and he obviously has the right to appeal but the chap’s guilty.

“He left the pitch and you can’t do that.

“If the referee had seen it he would have had even more problems.”

Standen’s sacking leaves a hole in the Blues midfield but Rowlett – who still believes Margate can make the Ryman Premier play-offs – doesn’t expect to replace him.

He said: “I don’t think we will this season, to be honest.

“We have Kieron Morris who can play that position in central-midfield.”

Very strange that Perry came on here yesterday with a different story to what the rumours were, and the club seem to have acted on the rumours. I thought it was strange when the club made it public so soon afterwards, yet Perry stated yesterday that he did not want to comment until he had spoken to the club and put things straight, which was a few days after. He even states that he apologised to the club for his action.

Am amazed at this decision, I believe the club has acted wrongly IMO. As Steve says thay are acting on rumours NOT the truth at what happened. If Dean appeals I for one would back him as I have said previously as I saw and heard what happened.

I think that this decision taking by the club is VERY harsh.

Although by leaving the field, dean was wrong, however i think sacking a player of this much quality at such a crucial time of the season could and most probably will be damaging to our play-off push.

Good luck Deano!!!!!

Tough call but I guess the club has to look at the bigger picture and think about reputation. As a player, I'm sorry to see Deano go. Over the past 2 seasons he has been one of our most improved players but I wonder how much of the decision the club has taken is the result of the cumulative impact of Dean's previous misdemeanors. That's something that at one time or another most people have commented on. And as the report said, that kind of action could land the club in trouble.

Yes Wellsie but they appear to have acted on rumours NOT the truth on this occassion. Anyway our disciplinary record is superb against someone like TONBRIDGE ANGELS for instant wink

Also says they will be taking action against the support which imo its about time. We have now lost 2 players because of so called supporter abuse and it has got to stop. Why do Margate supporters feel they have the right to abuse the team its been getting steadly worst over the last 18 years ive been going to Hartsdown.

You kind of expect it as a player from the opposing support but it really hurts coming from you own support who you are breacking a bollock to win for. We should be cutting this crap from the crowd and make it more of a family atmosphere.

My understanding is that the directors did speak to people about the incident so I'm not sure that to suggest they were acting just on rumour is entirely fair. I personally have no doubt that they wouldn't have taken the decision lightly and they also know what an important player Dean has become.

Well if they did ask people Wellsie the fans need an eye test because NO WAY did Deano jump a barrier as it has been quoted in both this weeks Papers.

Also CE they are seperate incidents that Deano has paid the price for with suspension and loss of wages so shouldn't have come into the equation IMO.

Alan you keep going on about "rumours". Isn't it a fact that for whatever reason,& by whatever exit he used,Dean Standen left the field of play to remonstrate with a fan.

You saw it,I saw it & theres been no mention that that was NOT the case.Thats what he got the sack for.

Yes,the red mist from his past has probably swayed the clubs decision but on the day Dean took a personal decision which was the wrong one & he will have gone home thinking that too I would imagine. Can you put those needless red cards down to a fans behaviour too?

The club cannot overlook this kind of behaviour by ANY player. Players have a responsibility not only to themselves but to the club to behave correctly & in a dignified manner no matter whats flung at them.

The player can get satisfaction by going about things in the right way without taking things into his own hands.

The club have said they will deal with the individual fan in question.

I honestly thought apologies all round would have sufficed here with a proviso that this kind of behaviour would not be repeated.

However I can see why the club has made this decision & they havent done so on "rumours".

Besides if they had done they would have me protesting in the same way as you & others are doing but the bottom line is that Dean Standen went one step too far on Saturday whether provoked or not & he has paid the price for it.

I am not jumping for joy at this decision as some of you might think I am.Its an unsavoury end to Deans time here & its unsavoury for the club to to have had to make this decision but the club comes first before any individual whether that be a player or fan.
