Sorry state of Margate town on youtube

Anyone with whom I come into contact in London knows that at the slightest opportunity they will get a lecture from me about Margate.

I find that film really sad, especially with the song as background.

Councils are made up of people who are usually trying to do their best with little resources (I did it for thirty odd years!). Sometimes helps to talk a place up, and having moved down here nearly twenty years ago, it's miles better than it was then. I've lived and worked all over the UK, and would rank Margate in the middle of the pack and rising (and Thanet as a whole a lot higher)......anyone been to run-down Blackpool recently, or any other town that had its heyday before people jetted off to Spain? Anyway, less of that, roll on Saturday pm - bright sunshine forecast, a crowd of 457, and a 3-1 Gate way as we storm back into playoff contention!!

Please see me on Saturday so you can explain that comment to me how Margate (NOT Westwood) is much better now!!!!!

WARNING!! Longish post so if you haven't got the stamina or patience to read it DONT!! I won't be offended.

I have to say similar Cliftonvilleblue. That film is just the tip of the iceberg.I was born here & believe me over the past 10 years, not 20 or even the 50 or so that I have been around here for, this town has gone from a thriving seaside resort to a ghost town. The council need shaking up & the town needs councillors that will actually think more about the town, its residents & its future rather than think about what THEY can get out of it.What they are trying to do now is not the answer & the sooner they talk to the people but more than that LISTEN to them the sooner we can get back those glorious days,if its not too late that is,& it wouldn't cost half as much as what they have wasted already or are about to waste on that Turner white elephant. The arts will definately NOT make this town what it was or anywhere near to what it was..
Margate used to be a great place to visit(& to live,to some extent, unless you are polish with no-where else to go & where no-one else will take them.To them its heaven!)but its not anymore & theres only one section of people to blame for this. Those high fliers who are ONLY in it to make a few bob for the short time that they are in power & make a name for themselves(so they believe). They'll make a name for themselves alright, but for the wrong reasons. Its happening already. Why do we always have to wait for the proof of mismanagement before we get an apology too & why aren't these people able to be brought to justice for degrading a town in such a way.
They have been warned that that their lack of thought will backfire on them without doubt but by then they will have made their money & be gone to places elsewhere leaving us to live with the results of their errors.
This council is an embarrassment & in turn they embarrass us,the people of Margate.
This town is now a joke, the councillors are a joke, the people of this country look at this town these days and laugh at it but the people of Margate surely aren't laughing & don't find it funny at all.

I think I'm going to end up agreeing with you lot in the end (Frankie and Cookie)! I suppose my defense mechanism cuts in because I worked for TDC for seventeen years......but there's a difference between working there for a living and being a politician of course. Politicians tend to have to be aligned to a political party, and that's when the trouble starts - they all have their own egos to feed, the needs of the district as a whole start to become second choice, and good investers start backing off. There are some good local councillors, though, and some have supported the club, although I have told a lot of them personally that they should put in an appearance at their local club more often - and pay like the rest of us as well! I shall continue to say that when I get a chance. IMO, though, there's a bigger problem with some Thanet businessmen (and others who pretend to 'invest' in it from outside and just contribute to the decline), who have consistently milked the area to line their own pockets. Anyway, there you go, football's got lost somewhere in this thread, and I still maintain Thanet's brighter now than it was when I came here......and I count Margate as part of Thanet!

I'd say that the town was much better 20 years ago.

The high street had shops and I had many good times at Dreamland.

The town had a BHS where I have many memories sitting in the restaurant looking over the harbour on a stormy day. Now I like Westwood Cross but i'm discusted at what its done to Margate High Street and town.

We now have an empty cinema because of Westwood. What will they do with that?

I've just read that the Tivoli arcade may close. What will that become?

The fact is that you could fit all of those shops in the bottom of the high street in the upper part and Cecil Square Arcade.

Thats how bad it is.

I'm not sure what the answer is really.

I'm affraid in the last 25 years since my earliest memories I cannot remember Margate looking worse. It's a real shame it really is.
