Wingate & Finchley 0 Hornchurch 1

An excellent game to watch and 90 minutes of hard work from both sets of players.

Wingate were a young spritely side and had the first chance in the 4th minute when a Dean Williams effort from a Daniel Boateng pullback was blocked by Paul Wood. We replied 5 minutes later following a superb ball from Scott Gooding to Garry Kimble on the left touchline who sent the ball into the area for Andrew Martin who flicked the ball just over the bar. Two minutes later Williams shot over the bar when well placed and on 29 minutes a great run from the half way line from Gavin McGowan ended with a shot which flashed across the face of the goal and narrowly wide. 5 minutes later Williams again brought out a good save from Wood who tipped over his chipped effort but the tit-for-tat continued when a Jamie Southon far post header from a Kimble free-kick narrowly missed the target 2 minutes after that. In injury time in the first half, Wingate thought they had taken the lead through Williams whose effort from a far post cross beat Wood, but was somehow cleared off the line by Southon.

We were a little stronger in the second half and within 4 minutes of the restart a Garry Kimble 20 yard free kick had home keeper Andy Walker scrambling to push the shot wide. Boateng took a free kick from a similar position at the other end 4 minutes later but sent his shot wide from probably their clearest chance of the second half. With 15 minutes left a Gavin McGowan chipped effort was swiped away for a corner from under the crossbar by Walker, and from the resulting corner, taken by Kimble, Vinnie John headed toward goal and Steve Jones, on as a sub and back from injury, headed in from 3 yards.

Line-up:- Wood, Lowery, Kimble, Gooding, Jopson, Moore, McGowan, Southon, Martin (Jones 67), John, Benstock (Locke 50). Subs not used: Cripps, Cowley, Collier (GK)

great stuff....bit like a pre-season friendly to be honest but nice to see two teams play football on the ground....we could have scored a good few as well....having said that they missed a good chance to go in front when the 'nimble cricket' leapt to clear off the line just before half time....

some good young players on the wingate team (number 11 mick) and real nice people as well....all of them....thanks chaps....good day out....very enjoyable.....I know it sounds daft but I'm sure they were pleased that we won......(possibly prefering us for promotion)

aint many grounds got palm trees next to the pitch......

reminds me of when I played at............

anyway...that's another story....!!...... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
