WEFC 3 - Fleet 3: a game with everything

Just look at the first half: IIRC the scoring went 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2 : finished Windsor 3 Fleet 2 on goals, Windsor 2 Fleet 1 on red cards... and Fleet equalised both in the second half.

Highlight for me was a fantastic individual goal from Chennels, ran forward chasing a clearance from our end, beat his man with the aid of a push which must have been the only offence by us the ref missed (including plenty of far tidier challenges), held off two Fleet men through to their area and then somehow put the ball past their keeper as he rushed up.

I did miss Coops' wonder goal, and Seedel's was, how to put it, deserved but fortunate: scuffed under a defender and the deflection took it out of the keeper's reach.

Honourable mention to our crossbar which somehow kept out a shot on an open goal.

Lowlight was the mass brawl, sparked as far as I could tell by a physical but not especially bad tackle from Burgess... still, don't know why most of their team and half their bench all rushed on. And OK, Seeds and Burgo were in the thick of it, Seeds' punch to lay out one of their players (in retaliation for a few thrown his way) probably did call for a 2nd yellow/red, but I saw enough punches thrown *at* red shirts to think we were treated rather more harshly for a fight we surely didn't start. Their captain was incredibly lucky to escape uncarded and a straight red would have been equally deserved.

IMO if the game had stayed at 11v11, or indeed been left square at 9v9, we'd have won: they had some good players and good teamwork but not the pace.

The second half we played almost entirely 9v10, and we were looking tired... still, we had a few chances even then.

Chennels for MOM by a long way, and gets my vote for January POTM also.

I think it would be fair to say Burgess was the instigator of the brawl. To be fair their guy did put in a bad challenge on him but you can't kick out and punch somebody when they are on the floor. After that it turned into a bit of a free for all, you really wouldn't want to be the ref in that situation as he could have easily sent off 5 or 6 from each team. The red cards he did produce were justified although I'm not sure how their no5 stayed on as he seemed to be throwing more punches than anyone.

If ever one thing was certain, their no5 was going to walk at some point in the 2nd half. I've never seen the chicken run get so animated, I'm sure the "off off off" chants were coming from 3 sides of the ground!

Fair play once we went down to 9 men everyone played superb, Chennels was brilliant, up against 3 sometimes 4 defenders he ran them ragged.

Positives = Overall a highly entertaining game.

Negatives = we do seem to have gone back about 12 months whereas we keep conceding poor goals from crosses.

The fact that we made Fleet look average for most the match, Chenns worked his socks off and quite rightly got clapped off by everyone when he was subbed. I've never seen a reaction like it when their 5 got sent off at last. It seemed everyone in the ground was expecting it and when it happened instead of cheering the fact he was off we cheered the ref for at last getting it right!!

2 of their goals were defensive mistakes and that's a shame but before the start of the game i would of taken a draw. Let's turn over Andover on tuesday!!

Some more light shed from the Fleet board - they probably were close enough to see more...

Quote:
Shortly after that all hell breaks lose. Adam Wallace (I think) finds himself on the deck after a tussle for the ball, and as he's getting up his opponent knees him in the head. Adam takes exception, his opponent retaliates and a full-on brawl involving virtually every man (including a bench clearance) ensues.

Once the dust has settled the referee sends off two Windsor & Eton players (apologies for the lack of names) plus Simeon Howell. We meet him at half time, and he swears he's innocent. Justice is partially done as Windsor & Eton were the protagonists, although their number 3 somehow evades punishment despite flooring Nathan Smart in the melee with some well aimed punches.

I noticed Ryan receiving plenty of venom, didn't see him dishing much out. Unless they were getting confused over Seeds' activity. And I still think that it was harsh for him to get red but he was on yellow already, and his equally-involved oppo also went: I suppose the ref had too much to occupy him by then to pick out more.

But their #5 evidently has a similar record to Burgo from what their board says: so I suspect he spotted a likely mark and was giving him lip up till then... not smart. I'd seen the tackle but had glanced away so missed the immediate aftermath.

Retaliation is no excuse, but it is a reason: and if he'd not been on a yellow already, and had punched out only after being slammed a few times himself, it might have been different.

And you can't give someone a red simply for being a very effective puncher. Remember, others showing more initial aggression got off without even a caution. Seeds was more visible, and was already on thin ice.

If throwing punches were the only reason for a red then we'd have had 3-4 at least walking from both sides. Hence I figure Seeds was harshly treated, not because he got the punishment merited under the rules but because others as or more culpable didn't.

Still, I guess it's probably as well we didn't still have Dykey on the right wing...

I'm pretty gutted that I missed this game now. The crowd sounded pretty wired when I was walking through the graveyard that afternoon.

It seems to me that the Royalists get worn out too easily and while the first 45 minutes they're spot on the second half is a touch disappointing. Was that the case with the Fleet game?
