Chester Match report

Recommended Posts

As Dave didnt have time to post this before he left on hols, heres my version of events from last Saturday.

I will try to put the Leigh report on here on Sunday and Dave can then add both properly to the Match reports section on his return :-

Fleet 0 Chester 1

This was a match where the “star” of the show turned out to be referee , Mr Kettle, who seemed determined to make a name for himself with some strange decisions, including the sending off of Mark Quayle, in a stamping incident, which even the Fleet defender involved, Nick Burton, agreed , was an accident.

Fleet had the first chance after 2 minutes, when a Jay Lovett cross skimmed off a defenders head and fell to Mark Bentley, who fired a 25 yard effort over the bar.

Chester immediately broke down the other end but a snatched shot from 25 yards was straight at Paul Wilkerson.

A minute later and Evans set up Kwashi for a clear shooting opportunity, but the Chester keeper stood up well and fisted the ball away and the follow up was scrambled clear.

After 9 minutes, Evans became the first victim of referee Mr Kettle, when he was booked for an innocuous tackle.

2 minutes later, a Kwashi free kick was cleared from the toes of Wilkins, as he lined up his shot.

On 19 minutes, a strong Bentley run from the halfway line was only halted 25 yards out, when he was crowded out by 3 defenders.

11 minutes later and a similar Bentley run ended with a disappointing shot bobbling wide of the far post from 25 yards.

On 32 minutes, a Chester break stretched the Fleet defence, but the final ball was slightly misplaced and allowed the defenders to regain their ground.

5 minutes later, Chester’s number 17 was booked for a high challenge on Jimmy Jackson, and almost immediately, Nick Burton forced the chester keeper to make an outstanding save as he clawed away a header from by his post and the recovered his ground to claim the follow up effort by Owen.

Owen was then booked for a slightly late challenge, which many referees would simply have spoken to the player about, rather than producing a yellow card.

On 40 minutes, Chester had the last chance of the half, when the Fleet defence gave away a free kick in a central position, 25 yards out. The effort, though well struck, was too high and cleared the bar.

So half time came with the game still goalless.

3 minutes into the second half, Chester almost took the lead when a cross from a good break down the right was well saved by Wilkerson at the back post.

Fleet did not heed the warning, however, and 2 minutes later, when an attack broke down, Chester again broke swiftly and Beesley was able to cut in from the right and place a low shot past Wilkerson’s left hand.

Fleet almost came straight back into the game, when a free kick floated in was knocked down for Wilkins, but his effort was deflected over the bar for a corner.

On 57 minutes, Mr Kettle made his next mark on the game when he sent off Quayle for an offence that no-one else in the ground saw, except him.

Fleet then brought on Liam Hatch in place of Rob Owen and Chester also made a substitution, bringing on their number 6 in place of number 4.

On 63 minutes, Jay Lovett carelessly gave the ball away on the Fleet right and it took Kwashi to get back and put in a good challenge on the edge of his box to save the day.

The game then went through a quiet spell, as Chester were content to sit on their lead, and Fleet struggled to find any sort of rhythm to their game.

On 75 minutes, Skinner had a shooting opportunity from 25 yards, but he could only hit the bobbling ball wide.

On 80 minutes, Mr Kettle struck again – on this occasion, however, the Chester number 17 could have no complaints as he received a second yellow card for a trip on Skinner. Mr Kettle, however, managed to book 3 other players for something and nothing in the same incident, when a general “Calm Down” would normally have sufficed.

Chester should then have been made to pay as Jackson’s free kick was flicked on and only needed the slightest touch at the far post. Hatch, however, somehow failed to make any contact and the ball drifted wide for a goal kick.

Fleet then had a further 3 opportunities in the dying minutes, as Chester resorted to keeping their remaining 9 men behind the ball. A Bentley header on 83 minutes was well saved on the line, then Bentley volleyed over the bar on 85 minutes, and finally, Evans turned the ball goalwards in a melee in the final couple of minutes, but didn’t quite make a strong enough contact and again the keeper claimed well on his line.

So Chester kept the faintest of hopes alive that they can still catch Yeovil, and Fleet were pushed closer to the relegation trapdoor. The game at Leigh next Saturday now takes on even greater significance, and is a real 6 pointer.

Fleet:-

Wilkerson, Lovett, Burton, Wilkins, Skinner, Bentley, Owen, McKimm, Jackson, Kwashi, Evans

Subs :- Hatch (for Owen 60 mins), Pennock, Turner, Strouts, Stadhart (for Skinner 80 mins)

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I would never want to write match reports, only on the basis that I see games from a different perspective than most on this site, however my main concern is that every week we have some gripe about the referee and his performance, and also we pick up silly cautions that will cost the club money.

Our disciplinary record doesn't stand too well against the other teams in the conference this season and that is something that needs to be sorted out. Is it really the case that the referees are that bad or, much as I hate to say it, is it the fact that our team need to be much more disciplined in the way they play?

You tell me...........

Oh and by the way I desperately want to be in the Conference next season

Which is why you should post your opinions on here more often - this is the place for debate.
Debate is all about differences of opinion.

Just because you don't agree with us, doesn't mean that we 'regular' posters are correct.

In fact you are part correct about the refereees - a lot of our bookings are for things that can be stoppd,
such as kicking the ball away, etc. - but that doesn't alter the fact the referees are awful.

Look at Mr. Kettle last saturday.
