Margate Reserves overcame a very physical Erith Town who just seemed intent on knocking the very young Margate side out of the game, winning 2-1 thanks to a fine display by Alan Heath with two goals.

Margate, who had 9 players aged 16-19 in the squad, started at pace and Erith soon conceded free kicks. Paul Axon heading into the goalies arms as early as the 2nd minute, then Alan Heath having the ball snatched away just as he was about to head it goalbounds. Olti Kecki then picked up a header by Heath but his shot was straight at the keeper.

In the 17th minute a lovely flowing move started by Ryan Harker, who hit a great pass to find Kenny Pratt on the left, who then cut to the byeline where he crossed to find Joe Taylor on the edge of the 6yard box but he could only balloon is shot over the bar. He nearly mafr up for this error ten minutes later when a deep free kick by Harker found him but his well hit shot fizzed just wide of the left post.

Darryn Vanhinsberg then hit a shot wide of the post. Alan Heath met a John Hinley corner but his glancing header went just wide. Erith then had what was probably their first chance a few minutes before halftime but Nick Powell's shot went well wide.

Margate continued pressing in the second half and a free kick by Dan Stokes found Axon who sent his shot wide. Harker then hit another free kick right across the face of the goal where Taylor touched it back in the danger area but Erith managed to clear. Margate then finally got the goal their pressure deserved when a corner by Vanhinsberg in the 53rd minute resulted in a goalmouth scramble, where Heath finally got a touch on the ball to put his side one up.

Three minutes later Erith did put the ball in the net by their sub Alwayne Jones but in doing so fouled Matt Lamprell in the Margate goal. Axon then went on a fine mazy run but his shot was defelected for a corner. Shannon McNamee who came on as a sub for Hinley, then hit a powerful shot just over the bar. In the 68th minute the lively Jones hit a shot just wide but in the process of shooting did look to be held back in the area but luckily the ref did not appear to see it.

Jimmy Mclean then came on for Taylor with 15 minutes left and a couple of minutes later Margate increased their lead. Erith, once again conceded a free kick in a central area, Heath spotting the keeper was off his line, took it quickly and hit a beautiful lob over the keeper from 35 yards to cap of a memorable MOM performance. However Erith hit back three minutes later when Vanhinsberg miscued a clearance, the ball falling to Bobby Cooper who hit it gleefully into the net.

This galvanised Erith and Lamprell saved superbly from Mick Smith when he tipped his well hit free kick over the bar. From the resulting corner Lamprell again came out to punch the ball clear from the advancing Erith players. Deep into injury time McClean picked up a ball on the left and put in a great chip shot but the ball went just wide.

Team: Lamprell, Stokes, Harker, Anderton, Heath, Axon, Kecki, Hinley (McNamee 61st) Taylor (McClean 75th), Pratt, Vanhinsberg. (Summers 85th). Subs not used Payne, Donohue.

Yes, good report Alan

I was proud to be a blues supporter, watching the way the boys handled the tactics of the Erith team. The lads are a credit to Mark Weatherly and Steve Moore.

Maybe Erith think kicking and elbowing, tackling through from behind, will keep them up. "Try playing football". perhaps their inability to do so is why they play the way they do.

Their attitude before the game was summed up by a gingery haired player turned to his cronies and said, "look at this place, what a faa**ing Sh*t ole, innit".

Well done lads.
