Letter From Canvey Island FC

Recommended Posts

This is a copy of a letter Eamsie received from Canvey Island this morning...

Dear Steve,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank your supporters who contributed the large sum of money for Candy Bloomfield, the young leukaemia sufferer who was one of the Mascots for the game.

The total raised was counted at £1751.00, a wonderful total that far exceeded everyone's expectations. I would be extremely grateful if you could pass on our thanks to those involved.

All the best for the remainder of the Season.

Yours in Sport,

Wayne Purser

CIFC Match Secretary

I gave you a big mention in our matchday programme for last night's game, I hope that makes up for it!

Whoops! didn't mean that! Unfortunately the scan of my programme article is far too big to post on here and if you reduce the size you can hardly read it! I've managed to post the article in a zipped Word Document for you to look at.

Trust me! This was in last night's programme! I've given you lads a good mention.

Hope you enjoy it!

A Supporter’s Notebook

Last Saturday must go down as one of the weirdest experiences I’ve had watching Canvey. I’m always fairly confident when it comes to Canvey winning games.

Most times when I turn up at Park Lane or for an away game, I’m normally very confident that we will win. I wasn’t before St Albans. I just couldn’t see us winning. We’ve had so many injury problems and in the last couple of games we had not really played to our full potential. With Aldershot having a home banker over the seemingly doomed Enfield, things were not looking good. We really would have to pull something out of the bag to get the three points. So I turned up at the Lane with my expectations virtually zero.

After making the acquaintance of several of the EFM(Colin Zeal and his band of merry drunks), who I have got to know through the excellent non league net discussion forums, I stumbled out of the bar with a slight haziness swimming around my head (probably down to the Samboukas that they were buying me!).

As I made my way round to the seawall end, I heard a roar, looked up and saw our fans celebrating. It took me over 30 seconds to convince myself that we had scored and not St Albans (talk about alcohol slowing down your reactions!).

As I finally positioned myself behind the goal, their defender made a complete mess of a back pass and Ollie Berquez nipped in to score. Two-nil up, and with just two minutes on the clock. I stood there, believing that EFM had put some mind changing drug in my drink and this was all some lovely dream. I remember a BBC Essex commentator saying the words “pinch yourself” after Greggors had given us the lead in the Port Vale FA Cup replay. I was doing precisely this right now.

As Albans got one back, I thought normal service had been resumed but then Lee Boylan gave us a 3-1 lead that we kept until half time. EFM were in the bar, getting very merry and seemingly oblivious to their team’s plight.

Things just got better in the second half. Boylan completed his hat trick, Parms scored a wonderful fifth with a fantastic bending shot from thirty yards and then Lee scored his fourth. Final score 6-1 and every Canvey fan finding it hard to believe what they had just seen. Merv was saying on the forum that this wasn’t just sexy football it was positively pornographic!

So EFM went off in a very intoxicated state but happy in the knowledge that their drinking exploits had raised over £700 for young leukaemia sufferer Candy Bloomfield. Well-done lads! Drunks with very big hearts!

The result sent shock waves around the Ryman league. You could almost hear the Shots’ fans asking, how? Now the real fun and games start.

Tonight is another important game with the visit of local rivals Billericay in an eagerly awaited local derby. After a promising start to the season, things have gone horribly wrong for ‘ricay’. To cut the wage bill and free up some much-needed cash, many of their best players have been sold in recent months. The likes of Roy Essandoh, Danny Kerrigan, Andy Douglas and our very own Mark Graham have been sold to ease the financial crisis. As a result Billericay’s squad has been virtually decimated and in recent games they have been forced into playing several youth team players. Of the senior players who still remain at the club one of them is Ollie Adedeji who had a short spell with us at the start of the season. Let’s hope that the only Ollie getting on the score sheet tonight is our very own Ollie B.

Despite their problems, Billericay will be up for this one tonight. It’s a local derby and certainly ‘ricay’s’ younger players will relish playing in front of a big crowd.

With Shots away to Basingstoke tonight it could be another very significant evening in the race for the Ryman Premier title.
