Borg in at Boreham

George Borg has been named as the new manager of Ryman League strugglers Boreham Wood.

The former Enfield and Aldershot Town boss has been appointed until the end of the season, when the position will be reviewed. His brief is to keep Boreham Wood in the Premier Division. With four clubs being relegated, Wood currently lie two places and four points above the drop zone.

Borg replaces Micky Engwell as manager. Engwell will remain on the coaching staff at the club.

Boreham Wood chairman Danny Hunter said: "After we lost at Hitchin a couple of weeks ago, I had to fully accept that things were dire. So I sat down with Micky Engwell and spoke about it. I felt we needed a change and something to freshen up the changing room. With that in mind, we have acted.

"I am very pleased to say that I have offered the job to George Borg and he has accepted. So I look forward to watching the team progress again. In all fairness, things have been very stagnant. I feel the players have let Micky down and let the club down. But it is not too late - our Premier Division safety is still in our hands.

"George Borg's past record speaks for itself. In the time I've been in football, I've got to know George on and off the park and we've always got on well. My exact words to him this week were 'George, I need help!' and his reply now is 'Don't worry about it - we're not going down!' Sometimes you need people around you with that confidence.

"We've got six games to go and I'd like to say that George's appointment will go on further than that. But if we did get relegated, there would be a lot of decisions to be made here. Would George want to manage in Division One? With his experience and know how in the Premier, I am sure he would want to continue to work on the bigger stage. But I would like to think we will stay up, we will progress and we will go on from here. We want to be at the forefront of non-League football and our current league position is nothing short of a disaster.

"Micky Engwell has worked very hard here over the past three years as a player and a manager. But managers are in the results business and Micky is the first one to acknowledge that 13 points out of a possible 45 since January is not the form that keeps you your job. In saying that, Micky has been very supportive and he will continue to be involved here in youth/community coaching and projects off the field.

"George Borg has come in with Micky's best wishes. Micky has told me that he has worked under George before and he feels there would be no one better for what we require in the next month or so.

"We need points. The one thing we haven't got is time. I believe George will give the changing room, the supporters and the town the lift it needs. And we do need it! We were relegated from the Premier three years ago and it was the most painful experience you can imagine. It took a lot of money to get us promoted again and we need to fight to retain our top flight status.

"We've got six cup finals left and George Borg at the helm. I'm happy with that."

Boreham Wood travel to Purfleet on Saturday, followed by four games at home before a final away fixture at Maidenhead.

There are some short memories at BTFC I remember your visits to shots when good old george was manager there (Ithink 99/00)

He was aware at that time that the situation between both sets of fans was delicate shall we say, (a knife attack amongst other issues)and both clubs were doing there best to keep the situation under control

But not good old george he deliberatly wound up shots supporters from the warm up and through the game

His body language was at best damaging including during the game where on at least two occassions he physically delayed BTFC throw ins including such deliberate provocation as throwing the ball away from the intended thrower

Difficult to paint the picture but trust me it was not pleasant nor was it the actions of a man to be trusted in such a high profile position

In my opinion he is a one off rabble rouser who can only ever be of short term value to any side/club
