Front Page of Gravesend Extra, dated January 11th 2008 reads:

Students given a sporting chance

The name of the game for Ebbsfleet United is learning.

And the Clubs goal is to motivate youngsters by using sport, which is why it has put in a planning application to build a study centre.

As part of a national initiative called Playing for Success the stonebridge Road ground has teamed up with Kent County Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families to produce the centre.

An Ebbsfleet Unuted spokesman said "It is aimed at all the schools in the area, taking children who are struggling with numeracy and literacy"

The Club finds out if the application has been succesful later this month and if it gets the go-ahead it is expected to be up and running by early summer.

The building, which will be an area of the ground which is not used, will be able to house about 16 people and have a computer suite. (Picture shows the empty terrace, along the Main Stand at the Swanscombe end).

The Club would not disclose how much the project will cost but said it was a "significant investment".

The centre will provide activities in the form of an after-school club. It will be used to motivate, improve self esteem and raise attainment of the youngsters.

It will also provide rewards and incentives such as tickets to matches, merchandise, tours of the ground, visits by players and coaching sessions.

If permission is granted it will be the second of its kind in Kent, with one already based at Kent County Cricket Club in Canterbury.
