HORNCHURCH 3 ENFIELD TOWN 2

Hornchurch, kicking towards the windmill end, and captained by Jamie Southon, having his first match of the season, nearly took an early lead when Shane Oakley’s left wing centre was headed inches wide by Julian Charles. Urchins took the lead on 18 minutes when Amos Foyewa, playing at right back, won possession after Enfield had cleared a corner, and Amos played a neat pass out to the left wing to Mark Janney whose first time cross was driven home by SHANE OAKLEY. Several chances were missed before Urchins went further ahead, Oakley’s corner from the left being headed against the post by Martin Carthy, with FRANKIE CURLEY following up to crash the ball into the net.

Enfield had a rare chance to pull a goal back when Healey ran on to a defensive error and raced goalwards, but hit his shot wide of the far post. Just before the interval a quick free kick from Janney sent Oakley clear, but he hit his shot wide.

It was a different story in the second half, with the visitors having a strong wind in their favour, but it took a needless hand ball from a corner to turn the game round, with PAUL CAMPBELL hitting home the penalty. Urchins lost Julian Charles with injury and played the remainder of the match a player short, having no other substitutes available, and Enfield levelled the score when DAVID ALLEN glanced home a free kick from the left, and was immediately substituted. Urchins then stepped up a gear and Enfield were at full stretch, totally committed to defence, with Halle and Tomlinson now in full command in midfield, and Jamie Southon acting as sweeper. Ross Wall found himself clear on goal and keeper Hasler made an excellent save with his feet to turn the ball out for a corner, and shortly afterwards a through ball again found Wall, with Hasler again making an excellent save. In stoppage time the ball was cleared frantically for a corner, and with everyone up bar Eliot Justham, and the entire Enfield team back in their own penalty area, the ball came over from Tomlinson, and MARTIN CARTHY hammered it home through a mass of defenders.

Julian Charles rings a bell. Who did he used to play for?
