I have decided to become an Eighties Goth, but don't know where to start really.

I've been on a search engine and found a very useful page called "How To Be An 80's Goth", but I need to know if there's a shop in St Albans where I can buy black lipstick and a black velvet cloak. Also, I need black pointy shoes??

Also, I have a couple of goth albums, like The Cult and Joy Division, but does anyone know if there's a decent 80's goth compilation album I can buy??

Fortunately, I like Snakebite & Blackcurrant too.

CZ Joy Division were not goth!!! You never saw Peter Hook or Ian Curtis wearing mascara and lipstick! Moody yes, but goth absolutely not. With the exception of possibly Fields Of The Nephilim, and occasionally The Cure/Siouxsie And The Bashees there is no such thing as a good goth band The Cult indeed, I'm unaware of compilation LP's (it was my era), probably because there were never really more than 3 or 4 bands at any one time.

Why this sudden change of image sir???

Goth in sound perhaps, but definitely Manchester attitude. They were influenced by punk and The Velvet Underground, just that Ian Curtis was a very intense guy and suffered from severe epilepsy and later on depression. I take it you knew they became New Order

Yeah!!

Hmmm, just done a bit of a web-search on Joy Division. Indeed, many JD fans are adamant that they are not goth.

However, other sites claim that Joy Division more-or-less invented goth. Check this one here!!

Another site claims "Joy Division were 'goth', but only in the sense of true gothic mystecism."

I understand where they're coming from, but if you go down that road you might as well say that The Doors, Nick Drake and The New York Dolls started off the goth scene.

Enough already, if you become a goth I'll go back to being a 'grebo'!

C.Hart I know the shop you're on about, I got my pink hair dye from there! It's the one near the Daily Grind (grrr!) You can get black nail varnish from most make-up shops. I got mine from a line called 'Miss Sporty' in Superdrug. It's good 'cos the make-up is cheaper than other lines but the quality is not as good as others.

Pink hair dye! You don't have a ring through you nose by any chance?

Snakebite and black is actually the drink of choice at the moment - Me and Carl had it in Newcastle and the boy Fad's has been drinking it loads since - Not many pubs sell it but he tends to look at them with his terrorist eyes and it's Snakebite and blacks all round!

I thought you were getting a bit depressed CZ but to become a goth, you need some help pal.

However I do know of a goth pub round the back of Camden, I've been there a couple of times!

How strange MTV2 just played Love will tear up apart by Joy Divison then This Corrosion by Sisters of Mercy.

It's No repeat day so I guess they have to dig about the bowels of the MTV building (Swallowed by Bush is currently playing) rather than play Stickleback every 30 minutes like they normally do.

Now they are playing Sale of the Centry by Sleeper add Paeches by Presendents of USA (a few minutes ago) and it feels like my indie disco circa 97!
