11 v 9 & Chester took the p*** out of us

Recommended Posts

Didnt see many oportunities for 'The Fleet'. Chester defended well but were dissapointing for a top team. Due to holidays that was my last game this season. Please everybody out there give them plenty of support for the last four games. On paper today's was the hardest so things could get better.

It was a poor game

How do you think they got to be a top team? They defend well and score on the break, Chester came for a one nil and got it....since We can't do any better than that against nine men Chester deserved the three points.

Did anyone see what the first sending off was for? The ref must have seen something pretty bad to give a straight red but Nick Burton didn't seem hurt or particularly upset by whatever the forward did.

I am still trying to work out what went wrong today. We started well and Tostao was unlucky not to score in the opening minutes. I thought that we coped well in the first half without too many opportunities to score. Was this because Andy elected to play with only one striker (Evans) against the best defence in the Conference? We then conceded our obligatory early second half goal, although it came from a good move by Chester. Even so things really seemed to go wrong as soon as we were gifted a man advantage. I have no idea why Quail was dismissed , but then Mr Kettle seemed more likely throughout to punish for the obscure or minor offence than the really obvious and deserving. Then we gained a two man advantage and Chester defended like a well oiled machine. We had absolutely no idea how to penetrate their defence trying the same move time after time. Their 'keeper caught everything we sent into the box. To be honest at this point we looked poor. Even with four forwards we hardly managed a shot on target. If Che had played any deeper when he came on he would have been in goal! I wondered how other Conference sides would have tackled this situation? Would anyone else have done better? Perhaps a side with tall strikers to try and latch on to all those high balls we insisted on using against their tall defence? It was a difficult game on paper but we had a real chance to at least gain a point and we have to admit that we weren't up to it. The game at Leigh is now vital. They beat us at Stonebridge Road and we are going to have to return the compliment and beat them on their own ground. Come on lads!! Up the Fleet!!!!!

Their forward kicked Nick after the tackle, well almost. It was barely a tap, even Nick thought so, but the infamous Mr. Kettle thought otherwise. He should of been booked, but it was never a straight red. Then again Mr. Kettle made the rules up as he went along. Looking at the ref in a menacing manner, is a bookable offence in Mr. Kettle's rule book, but forearm smashes and bear hugs aren't. Mark Bentley almost pole-axed a Chester mid-fielder with a chest high boot that Jackie Chan would of been proud of. And Tostoa hacked down one of their forwards late in the game in our penalty area, but thankfully Mr. Kettle missed them.

We were warned about Mr. Kettle pre-season, as he was unofficially voted the worst ref in the Conference last season. Seven? yellows and two reds today make it a close run race for [****!!****] of the Year between him and Mr. Harris, who officiated at the Stevenage game. Oh! Yes Mr. Harris I haven't forgotten about you, either.

Todays result was our own fault, we looked tired and dull, with no imagination. Even with a two man advantage we couldn't breakdown a nine man defence. Well done Chester you did what you needed to do, especially your keeper, he was outstanding, but I doubt you'll win the play-offs, so see you next season.

To be honest, before yesterdays match I wasn't expecting too much but then after our first half performance I thought we could get something from the game.

I know it's only one game but I wasn't at all impressed with Chester, as already said before I think they rely on their defence and then catch teams on the break.

I still think that we need 2 wins, 48 points, to be safe and with Leigh and Farnborough still to play we have every chance of staying in the Confernece. Let's hope that Dagenham can do us a favour and beat Leigh tomorrow night which I assume is Leigh's game in hand?

Agreed. I could not see us loosing at half time. The pace of Chester on the break was apparant just before the goal with the attack that ended in a point blank header and a save from Wilkerson. Chesters game plan was to defend and break. They achieved it. Perhaps the team picked on Saturday was picked with the same thought in mind. It didnt work. At home its better to attack.

Whatever, its been an entertaining season. Andy has done well on a limited budget. Safety is probably secured with the new size conference.

Well played Chester.

I would not rely on the new size conference for safety you cannot change rules near the end of a season, we must do it on our own it is in our hands, 48 or 49 pts should be enough but three wins will clinch it, as for Chester i and many others near me thought they came with one thought defend and break and that is what they did, we had no idea how to break them down, they played very professionally especially when down to nine men, the Chester goalie with the idea kick it back to Wilko or out for touch although frustrating for us was the way to play out time, i also dont think they will make the league this year but we must learn from this and move forward

How did we not score in the second half ?

Has Wilko ever taken so many throw ins in his career ?

Why did we always seem to have two players standing on the right touchline in the second half when no one is going to score from out there ( ok ...Laurent Robert has done it this arvo....!!)...as Mick Channon always used to say....get 'em in the burx !

Cheers....
