Todays game

A very poor second half display, playing Tos and Louie up front i think was a mistake and putting crosses into the box all afternoon was a mistake the Chester two central defenders and goalie were to good for that, Andy Ford said on RK we picked a team to get behind them, afraid we did not, disagree with the comment Chester were no better than Woking, they played with us in the second half and put on a professional performance especially when down to nine men, we had no idea how to break them down and we must learn from this and how on earth these sponsor's chose Tos as mom is beyond me and certainly got a few laughs where we were standing, several players were caught out today and unfortunatly we cannot allow that, our fate lies with us now we have a fairly standard run of games to finish on and must look to win the next two if not three, i was totally fed up with this ref and the FA must start looking at the standard quickly before it gets out of hand, i also think two of our bookings could have been avoided.

Agree with Matt about man of the match either McKimm or Burton, both played will, Missed the big man, at the back, and our front line, (what front line)

We need to pick ourselves up Leigh, and Barnet are now massive games for us. On the bright side. I have currently 61 travelling on the coach, room for 16 more. come on they need us on Saturday. Also 43 at time of post going to Farnborough. Lets hope we have made it safe by then.

You're right Mepis, people at the ground who were slagging off Chester for their dull play were rather harsh, given that any side would have defended their lead given the same circumstances (i.e. down to nine men). You could see clearly why they have statistically the best defence in the league, and their goalkeeper was also excellent.

Overall, a disappointing game, with a terrible referee who was unfairly penalising both sides (particularly the red card for Quayle), and a lack of imagination from us (not helped by the bizarre decision to play one up front for the first time this season against, as previously mentioned, the league's best defence confused.gif).

Wilkins or Burton the MOTM for me, although there weren't many to choose from yesterday unfortunately. Quite simply, the Leigh game is more crucial than ever - we'll just have to hope they fail to beat Dagenham on Monday. smile.gif

Apart from that, they were no better than the likes of Woking.

A very close comparison - The best defence in the league ( Chester ) against the worst ( Woking ) . Woking have only let in a mere 54 goals more than Chester.

Whilst its not pretty, Chester were very effective and we didn't have the nous to break them down.

What would Andy give this season for a defence that was a good as that.

All aboard the good ship Fleet as we set sail for Leigh and conference survival.

Whilst people quote season-long statistics, I was refering to their standard of play yesterday. Now I know the referee spoilt it for both sides, but Chester showed, whilst having a good defence, just WHY they won't be going up.

Hmmm. If that's the case, we should all start hoping Canvey come up instead of Aldershot!! Doubt Benno would fancy Ryman League football.... assuming we're not heading in that direction! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Quote: "15 goals in 24 games for Paul Booth at Welling. Any chance we can get him back?!!!!!!"

Would he really make that much difference? Dont get me - Boothy was ok but is he any better than we already have?

All our strikers can score regularly in the Ryman league etc.

Budge scored another 2 goals on Saturday for Heybridge, Evans couldnt stop scoring for Tilbury. Even your friend Vansittart has scored a bucket load in his days with Sutton United but what has he done in the Conference?

Che blows hot and cold but when his on form I'd go as far as saying he is our only striker capapble of getting goals at this level. Evans looks promising but its early days for him.

As we saw on Saturday - we lack someone with that killer instinct in front of goal. We rely too heavily on our midfield to score goals but if the likes of Bentley don't score then we really do struggle.

Does anyone recall the Home match vs Canvey Island last season and the goal that Neil Gregory scored? Clinical finishing of the highest order - how many of our strikers can do that cause thats what you need at Conference level!

Some valid points Jim but u have to ask yourself why the strikers we had i.e Boothy, even Che couldnt be a 20 goal+ a season man even at Ryman legaue level playing for us. Yes Boothy may only have got 3 goals in 15 games this season but how many of those games did he start and collectively how many league goals have Evans, Budge and Hatch scored for us? After reflection of Saturdays game i feel Evans does have the potential to be a decent striker. When Vansittarts not been injured he has scored goals for Dover and Farnboro and he has real presence abt him, as well as a decent finishing touch which is what lets the Beast down. Agree with u abt relying heavily on the midfield, a point i raised last week.

It's one thing to rely on your midfield for goals but the moment We fall behind and start chasing a game We stop giving the ball to our midfield and revert to pumping aimless high balls forward in the hope that We might get lucky.

Bentley, Jacko McKimm and Kwashi hardly got the ball when We had a two man advantage on Saturday.

We should all get together behind whatever team Andy picks to ensure We stay up otherwise talk about who is or isn't good enough to play in the Conference is going to look pretty stupid if We are back in the Rymans.

Boothy started 9 games and was substitute in 6 his 3 goals were a penalty against Dagenham, a goal against Northwood and a goal at Chester.

The other 3 players have made 25 starts with 16 appearances as subs and have scored 7 goals.

To be honest Chester was one of the remaining games that I didnt expect anything at (Morecambe was the other) so whilst I was not that surprised with the actual result we should, I felt that, at this stage of the season, we should have had nous to be able to get at least one goal against nine men. We,ve had nearly a season of Conference football and if we dont learn to take opportunities like this when we get them we wont be having many more.

Thought the ref wanted to give the game to Chester in the first half, then G&N in the second.

A truly dire performance by the ref, the FA really have to look at the antics of jokers like this - both sets of fans were deriding him - we all couldn't be wrong !!!

Notwithstanding that, we really should have shown more imagination to score a goal against 9 men. With 5 in midfield for most of the game we looked a bit congested , Rob Macca and Benno all seemed a bit tight to each other with not enough space for the long pass - hence the need for the back 4 to do it. (I thought the defence played quite well, not just hoofing it up the field, but trying to play football.

Since we obviously have players who can pass accurately all over the park, there was no need for the midfield to lob the ball into the box all afternoon simply for the Chester keeper to collect it.

Once Chester were reduced to 9 men, then we needed to to pass the ball from midfield and get closer to goal.

All is not lost, D & R did us a favour last night, so it's onwards to Leigh and get a result.
