Oakes signs...

...for Shelbourne FC

I quote...

Oakes, meanwhile, has been handed a short-term contract that will keep him at the club for an initial period of three months.

The former Luton Town and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, 30, has run on hard times (huh?!) in recent seasons, but Fenlon will be hoping he can recapture the type of form that saw him impress in the Premiership for Wednesday as recently as 1997.

Fresh from Shels’ pre-season trip to the south of Spain, both men featured in the Reds’ most recent friendly, a 4-0 trouncing of Dublin City at Coolock over the weekend.

3 months? What the devil sort of contract is that then? Sounds more like an extended trial period to me. I'd be very interested to know if he's still at Tolka once Stewy Byrne is back up and running. Fenlon is one cagey b**tard.

All to Oakes' advantage I'd say. Three months of full-time football to sharpen his game, and he's free to try his hand at league football again.
