Assuming this isn't Dave having a little fun at our expense by playing an April's fool joke on us all . .

How the hell is renaming the Club to Gravesham Borough F.C. going to make the Club more relevant to the local community?

Gravesend and Northfleet F.C. is heaped in tradition and although its name reflects the 2 largest towns in the area - its support base is far wider spread.

The name Gravesend and Northfleet F.C. is synonymous with the surrounding area's such as Meopham, Southfleet, Cobham etc. People from these area's already attend matches so must regard it as "their" Club too. Just look at the numbers that went to Villa (7000) - were they all really from Gravesend and Northfleet?

Why not rename the Club to Ebbsfleet F.C. and have done with it!

There has to be 2 motives for renaming the Club:

a) The board feels it might broaden the support base or

B) The tentative negotiations with the local council and landlord over possible re-location etc. has led to the conclusion the Club would be better served if a name change was implemented.

If a) is the sole reason for renaming the Club then it is unlikely to lead to an influx of support. There are other ways the Club should look to broaden the support base through better advertising:

* The Club's main sponsor is The Reporter so why not get them to distribute flyers for Season Ticket applications during the closed season. Every year, I open my copy of the Newshopper to find an application form for bloody Charlton Athletic!

* As much as it hurts to say, the Club has no real presence in Gravesend Town Centre - despite the fact the Club is *presently* called Gravesend and Northfleet F.C.

Gravesend Town Centre as the focal point for life in the Borough of Gravesham could be targetted better.

In Gravesend and Northfleet alone there are over 50 pubs occupied by beer swirling individuals so why not circulate posters advertising next seasons fixtures in full too them?

Not only would the Club get the extra gate revenue but they'd probably drink the Fleet Social Club dry. I was actually contemplating getting some posters done for next season subject to the Clubs permission.

If B) is the reason for the name change then as much as I hate the idea - if a name change will help secure the Fleet's longer term future in a new state of the art stadia then change the darned name!

However, if B) is the reason for the name change then the board of directors must explain why they are doing it as opposed to changing the name of the club for the sake of changing the name as I think point a) would be.

Oh and if this is anybody's idea of a rib-tickling joke then they should be made to pay a hefty fine to the Players Pledge scheme for the distress casued!
