Hemel Hempstead 1 Hornchurch 3

A big win today and one of our best performances of the season so far.

For once we made a great start and scored early. Home keeper Darren Bonfield made a great save from Andrew Martin after 6 minutes but could do nothing to stop a curling Garry Kimble free kick from nestling in the far corner of the net after 8 minutes. Our second goal came in the 24th minute when a corner was cleared as far as Gavin McGowan on the edge of the penalty area who hit an unstoppable volley. For the last 20 minutes of the first half Hemel came at us with everything they had and were rewarded early on, in the 28th minute, with a penalty after Chris Moore brought down Ross Perrin. John Lawford converted from the spot but just before half time was sent off after an off-the ball incident involving Chris Moore. For a while Hemel looked likely to get an equaliser but we weathered the storm with some fine defending.

We started the second half like we did the first and a goal came after 54 minutes. This was a swift move forward, Vinnie John getting to the byeline and crossing for Andrew Martin at the far post, who headed back across goal where Gavin McGowan volleyed low into the net. This was closely followed by a an overhead kick from Danny Benstock which was pushed away and a Chris Moore header cleared off the line from the resulting corner. Andrew Martin forced another great save from Bonfield in the 60th minute and we had another chance headed off the line with 10 minutes left, this time from a Vinnie John header. Hemel worked hard, but with 10 men and several first choice players out due to suspensions they didn't quite have the strength.

Line-up:- Kharine, Marsden, Kimble, Gooding, Jopson, Moore, McGowan (Cowley 68), Southon, Martin (Cripps 90), John, Benstock (Lowery 81). Subs not used: Wood (GK)
