Club Bar

I observed at yesterdays game that a few of our Euro fans attended the match which to me was a pleasent supprise. To think

that they had travelled all that distance to watch the mighty FLEET.They also spent a lot of time in the bar.Now to me the bar is quite a sterile place for a football fan. What a great oppertunity to get some of the clubs history on the walls IE posters of Villa game, photos of cup and league victorys, previous team shirts, some history when the spurs players of the50"s were here.It might give them some ideas of how strong the roots of club and how much this matters to us older fan because without roots the club dies.It may also help to give the bar a better atmosphere and a few more people stay behind after the game. Why not present the man of the match award, player of the month award in the bar after the game.I am sure the club can find a few of these articles even mount them behind perspex to stop itchy fingers.

Superb idea, I'm all in favour of it. Many other clubs have a similiar thing going on, and I think it would massively boost the atmosphere and create a positive feel to the place.

I saw on TV once a programme I think it was about Scarborough cricket club. They had a big wooden board which was engraved with every player who scored a 100 at the club. I always thought something similar would work well at a football club.

A Fleet board of honour.

eg

Players who have played a certain number of games, say 250, 300 ?

Any player who get 100 goals in a career ?

Any player who gets 25 or 30 in a season ?

Players who get a hat trick ?

I dont know what levels thing would be set at , one for the historians, but at a level where to be on the board is a sign that you are a true Fleet Player and have atchievd something substantial.

When a player qualifies for the honour board, you take a picture of him at the board with a previous board player. This will create a bit of continuity and maybe players wil aspire to be on the board ?

just an idea

Maybe there could be a area for fans that visit the stadium or at least the bar, from other town,s cities, countries, etc to support the fleet, to hang there own towns pennant, flag or shield, to show how far flung the support for the fleet is.

First class idea.

could be as simple as a board for town postcards, but I like the idea of pennants better.

I think people who travel from miles away need somewhere to go to show their support.

A Visitors book ?

The club bar reminds me of a scout hut.

Will have to wear scout uniforms for one match then?

The club bar used to have pictures and memorabillia in there before it was refurbished. I prefered it before it was done as it used create a great little atmosphere. The decor resembled the Rovers Return.

Looks very informative on the official site as it is. Unfortunately I have neither the time nor the knowledge to write a history of the club pre-90s.

That would be a great idea and really give the bar a theme. At the moment, with the 14-inch TV's and the white walls, there is no real atmosphere in the place. I think it is possible to keep the bar stylish and sophisticated, whilst really making our mark on it. Some kind of project to show off the history, the support and the values and ethics of the club would be a brilliant idea, especially in a time when some supporters are disillusioned with how we are evolving- it is possible to progress and develop whilst being proud of a rich history.

Ah, is that a volunteer to help type in and research all missing data and convert the old results, scorers and attendances data going back 60 years? wink

I don't need encouragement, AFF, I need more hours in a day... hairout

Great ideas re club house and o/s visitors pennants.

Involved in Rugby Union for last 30 years and there is always a post match ritual:

Welcome to Away Team and short match summation by Home Captain/President as well as naming of 3-2-1 points to best Home Team players(with bottomless pewter for MOM..to be downed on the spot and refilled all night by fans, bar, fellow players)

Reply by visiting Captain..match summation...3-2-1 for their side.

Referee's speech...usually a form speech with the odd suggestion on where teams could improve laws wise....don't know how this one would go down in UK?

Team songs.

Drinking games.

Keeps fans at YOUR bar..boosts takings and club camaraderie.

Could get international fans to introduce themselves..sing a song?

Not sure how it would work in England given the need for stewards and separate seating areas at games.

If you feel so strongly about it then why not volunteer to help?

You clearly spend a lot of your time posting on here so why not use it to sort out something that clearly irks you?

Agree that this is a brilliant idea. Remember going to Telford in the late 70s & their clubhouse walls were covered with professionally mounted blow ups of old photographs, recording the club's history (they started out as Wellington Town before Telford came into being as a place.) Obviously one of the first points of call here would be Paul Harrison, who either has or knows where to get hold plenty of of archive material. Also, an appeal from the club for people to loan old photos, programs etc could turn up some nice stuff. This could all be returned afterwards, such is the ability of modern technology to reproduce & even improve originals.

Many years ago we had a small drive to get people to bring stuff in for a temporary display in the old Murray bar (which incidentally used to have numerous pennants of clubs encountered & collected hanging from the ceiling) and I remember being shown by Maureen O'Dell, who used to run the bar, a Northfleet United photograph, complete with Bill Nicholson sitting in the front row as captain, with an ancient brainbuster football between his feet. I believe a supporter had brought this in.

If this was done well, as has been suggested tracing the links from the past to the present, this could be really effective & something that could go with us should we move in the future.
