Midland Alliance club Quorn's young striker Luke Varney has become that latest non-League player to move up into the professional game according to nonleaguefooty.com. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Varney, who has netted 25 league goals this season so far, has signed for Nationwide League Second Division promotion-chasers Crewe Alexandra in a deal which could eventually net the Leicestershire club £50,000 once Varney has made a specified number of senior appearances for the Railwaymen. Quorn have also negotiated a sell-on clause.

The 20-year-old, has been the subject of interest from League clubs all season, with the likes of Birmingham City and neighouring Wolves two of the sides who have looked at him on various occasions.

Crewe have a reputation for developing young players, and it was this that persuaded Varney to make the move to Gresty Road after being monitored by Dario Gradi's number two, Neil Baker - no stranger to the non-League scene as a former boss at Leek Town.

Gradi said on Crewe's official website: "He is a quick striker who has scored goals for Quorn.

"It's not often we find a non-League player who we can afford to buy these days!

"Neil Baker has his network of scouts working and it's good that we've found one in the lower leagues. It's easy to go watch Yeovil Town and say 'he's a good player' but the prices quoted are high."

Varney came through the ranks at Quorn, who have had a highly-successful youth policy for a number of seasons and many others of their current first-team squad have also progressed through the system.
