Ashford Match Comments

So what did we all think?

Personally, thought we certainly deserved the win. Game started quietly, with Ashford having the most of the early exchanges. Once we sprang into life, we played some decent stuff and looked dangerous going forward. Scored a good goal, after fantastic work from Quain (who, along with Joseph, had a stunning game).

Played some really good football in the second half, up to the point where we scored our second. However, we seemed to sit back after taking the lead and, in truth, they certainly had enough chances to nick a point.

Overall, fair result and, more importantly, a good win. Only negative being that Standen limped off.

SCS

Smith Saunders Goodfellow Joseph

Side Standen Mckimm Quain

Pinns Haworth

Thought Goodfellow did a job for us, although the team still looked suspect defending setpieces - Scotty really has lost his confidence when dealing with crosses. Another plus, Jackson came on in the second half.

SCS

Smith Goodfellow Saunders Joseph

Side McKimm Standen Quain

Pinnock Haworth

Morris a first half sub on for Standen, Jackson on for Quain midway through the second half, and Side on for Axon with a few minutes remaining.

A well deserved three points I thought. Glad to see Quain putting in a good performance. That should give the lad the confidence that he can perform at this level for us. Mightily unlucky with his shot that came back off for post but fair play to Pinns for his composure in tucking away the rebound.

Midfield worked like clockwork. Macca, Standen and then Morris. Goodfellow and Jay Saunders, my man of the match, were very solid. Joseph had his best game for us IMO. Looked like he has settled in just fine. Smith at right back got forward more than I've seen him do before. Did ok, and was generally solid. Scott possibly could have done better with Ashford's goal, but other than that he did ok.

Our second goal was on the cards, with us well in command up to that point. Super flighted ball in from Charley Side onto Rob's head. Great downward header from Rob for the winning goal. No more than he deserved. Those two up front worked their socks off today. Well done lads. A good team performance.

I think everyone played well today but, we do tend to switch off a littlet to much today which cost us 1 goal and, could have have cost another.

Trotty should get a special mention today for the way he picked the correct team and got the result over Ashford who were the form team in the league.

Can't argue with that Joseba and again well done margate.

Not there so dificult to comment, but seems harsh on Morris for him not to get a start-guess RT just loves his wide men, but you do wonder if Side,Pinns and Haworth all play because they are 'senior' to Morris,(and RT does not like to put one of them on the bench) whereas would we be better with a midfiled of Standen (when available !!),Mckimm and Morris (playing on the right where he could also protect Smith) plus one wide player.(from a choice of about 6)

However, it is a results business, and RT got the result today so well done

Quain had a great game on the left wing, every bit as good as the recent performances by Martin in that position.

Jay was also superb, encouraging the others and getting stuck in. Possibly to blame for the goal I thought, without wishing to take away from his overall performance.

The new guy Goodfellow was brilliant at centre back; didn't put a foot wrong all game as far as I could see. I would give him MOM.

A great performance from Charley on the right, and what a pinpoint cross for Rob's goal. Well taken too.

Other performances of note: Ricardo at left back, Macca and Morris working well together in central mid, Pins full of running and as Porka says alert enough to put away the rebound off the post.

I thought Smithy might be a bit disappointed with his game today, although to be fair we know he prefers a central position.

Also it was nice to see Jacko coming on as sub although Quain had done nothing wrong.

Standen was carried off in case nobody has mentioned it, but then again he will have plenty of time to recover, won't he?

Poor decisions by the donkey in the black throughout the game, lucky not to have cost us. You knew he was going to be an idiot when he did that show-off fancy handshake with the linos before the start.

Yep, very happy with the performance against the form team of the league.

All sounds promising-maybe at long last we have resolved the central defender position (and RT swallowed his pride and finally did something about it-how many points has that mis-judgement cost since August ).

Of course-one door closes and another opens-right back needs sorting now-or can Ricardo play at right back and JJ left back as it sounds as though Skinner is out for the season

Yes. Just as Louis Smith and Keiran Morris were. Just goes to show what we have missed in the past when we didn't have a reserve side.

I agree with most of whats been said. Ashford are a team that lately have come out of their blocks firing. They didnt disappoint on that score.

However we held firm & got into the game more & Quain(he'll continue to improve)did very well as did Pinns for the first goal.Great to see Rob getting on the scoresheet. He'll bag a few more I reckon now after today.

Jay was "super super Jay" at the back & Goodfellow

(considering he hasn't played for a while) did a very good job alongside of him.

Jacko coming on was my news years wish come true. We will see better results with him around.

Josephs was very good AGAIN at the back.Charley Side coming back into the team has given us more flair up front. He worked very well & delivered some good balls. He too has made a big difference to the side. With him & Jacko back together we could well get that elusive 3 win streak.

Everyone did their bit today against a decent Ashford side. Their no:4 was a talented player I thought & was a danger whenever he got the ball.

They were unfortunate not to sneak a point but I too believe that we just shaded it & just about deserved the win.

Yes,if its the tall thinnish one with blonde hair.Credited with their goal I believe(though I thought at the time that it was a miscued clearance from Josephs).Waltzed through a few of our guys though to get into that position for the goal(regardless of who put in into the net). Have a word Joseba by all means. He did good.

Thought the defensive performance was great especially given injuries. Yes, Goodfellow played superb, my MOM! One concern is if this defence now gets injured..we're still relying on sunday league players on the bench. Hopefully injuries will clear up but overall great stuff!

Quain,IMO was the man, best I have seen him play,as for the game,I just want to see the Gate play more football instead of lumping the ball up for RH to deal with. The ref today was crap but also consistent to both sides,i think the reason he did not give the pen to RH is if he had maybe he would had have to show a red to both of the Ashford players, but,it was a 100 per cent pen,all in all a good win for the GATE.
