SLB v Kentish Town - 5 Jan 08

SpursFan - We were a relatively new team to the tournament. Russia too. If it wasn't an important rule, why go through the farce of players coming to sign in, putting tags on them when they arrive etc.

It would have been easier to scrap the registration.

Instead, teams that played by the rules struggled in the second day with injuries, stamina and the rest after playing 3 games in the group stage. While other teams looked as if they had just started the tournament. The fact is, they had.

Halves are 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. But it's the stop and start that's the killer. Warming Up, then cooling down. Waiting for your next game. Taking on food and drink at appropriate times. From first thing in the morning till late afternoon.

On the Sunday, you're going to feel the day before and you have four more games to reach the final.

Special1 - It's interesting that you are making a meal out of this Inner City World Cup debate and it's clear that you have a chip on your shoulder the size of Football Man's over it because there is some history there between yourselves (Portugal) and Colombia which is why you slammed the door in Hector Varela's face when he came knocking at Reynolds Field. I gather that in 2005 you met the Colombians in the last 16 of the tournament and they beat you 1-0 with, surprise, surprise, Javier Rivera scoring the winning goal of Ricardo Villa proportions at Wembley in 1981. The following year you were hell bent on gaining revenge and painstakingly got together a squad of 22 players who, shall we say, were not all entirely Portuguese born and bred, many were from your former colonies, Vasco de Gama style, such as Angola and Mozambique etc, the rules clearly state that players must belong to the Country they are representing. Colombia also reached the final in 2006 and were beaten by Bulgaria on penalties who fielded a number of National players, one of which played for them in the 1994 FIFA World Cup and scored three goals in USA. Last year Colombia won the tournament again by beating The Gambia on penalties in the final so your criticism's of their team and tactics are very unfair and totally unwarranted. Lets drop the matter now.

Probably Boncho Guentchev. He also made the occasional appearance for a team of Bulgarian immigrants called FC Sofia who played in the Middlesex County League for a couple of years before being chucked out for, amongst other things, racist behaviour (i.e. they played the race card every time something went against them that they didn't like).

Sure enough Hector's assistant threw that accusation our way (as if to justify his own actions) and we showed him the player's id card. Red faced, that's when he came out with the fact that they did it every year.

The same can be asked of Colombia.

I think you will find that all our players had portuguese national id cards at the ready on the day. Therefore, they are portuguese citizens, whether born in Portugal or not! We do not have a commonwealth as such but once upon a time ...

The previous year, a team made a complaint (maybe it was Colombia) and we had to provide proof to the organisers and did so without hesitation (funny how it is one rule for one team and totally different for the other).

The tournament is supposed to be amateur - that means amateur players. This would mean no semi-pro players!

It was Boncho Guentchev, who would be in his 40's. No rule against ex-professionals. His retired status would now make him amateur.

Did all of the Colombia team use tags this year?

Instead of deflecting the issue, have Hector Varela justify his actions on the day and explain them. Then you will find out whether their tactics are very unfair and totally unwarranted. You have to laugh! giggle This I have to hear...

Did you see the story last month about the player up north somewhere who was sent back to prison when his tag came off during a tackle in a non-league game? Even though it was reported to the authorities straight away, he was still put back in the slammer for breaching the terms of his release by not wearing the tag at all times!

Strangely enough you mention Russia who Colombia beat too in 2006 on their way to the final, they had a number of high profile players in their squad including one from the USA major soccer league. It's an interesting tournament and certainly not 'Mickey Mouse' as you indicated it was, I think that comment was very much sour grapes, how can that be the case if it is shown in 74 Countries around the World and covered by the World's press.

Have you seen it on TV? Community TV on freeview, maybe.

The protest was made before the game not after. So rules out your sour grapes theory.

Most teams reach the final via penalties. Colombia beat us via penalties. They beat Russia via penalties too, I think. They even won this years final on penalties. Maybe they should call it the Inner City Penalty Shoot Out World Cup. giggle
