SLB v Kentish Town - 5 Jan 08

Recommended Posts

Lady Tottenham was drinking too much coffee and her mind was racing.

LordEagles gone she thought? Yet he always sent me a cheery postcard from the deepest parts of the discovered world, where can he be now where there is no British consul or Thomas cook office to write a card?

He so enjoyed writing, what has happened to make him stop?

I always wondered , thought she, why the ambassador with special responsibilities for sketches of Portuguese sporting events managed to spend so much of his valuable time reporting back to the spartan estate, and had such a keen interest and knowledge in the london branch when there are so many other branches worldwide that could have attracted his attention. Even when abroad his thoughts returned not to lisbon, but London.

It would take a specialone to take his place she thought.

over lunch the guests spoke with the new arrival. LordEagles has gone and I wont be here much he said.

You talk much so much more politley than LordEagles but you say the same things said MrCecil.

You look a little like him too though the moustache is missing and the exclamation mark is missing from your card.

I am not lordeagles at all said the newcomer no no. oh no.

He stayed at my lodgings recently and uses the family carrier pigeon yes, Im flattered but no, not me .

you are sending us lots of postcards said lady tottenham which is nice because they come about as often and at the same times as lordeagles did.

How did you get on in the Regents Park tournois said MrCecil

well the new guest said it was all down to the wrong dress code and the tournois isnt worth entering you know and he banged on the table and laughed into his sherry.

Poirot noticed

a little stubble was appearing just under the new arrivals nose,...

.. and the storyteller, Aaron of Somewhere East of Grinstead, rested atop Box Hill, as he wended his way north. He looked down upon the Burgh of Dorking, astride the might Mole. He was thirsty and sore hungry, but the tavern there was full of rough little men who would injure him. He was bound for the land of Spartan, in the area wrongly referred to as the South Midlands. He was seeking the whereabouts of a stranger from another land, called Portugal, who had besieged the Vale of the Peri with his hordes. He must press on, hungry or not....

poirot was distracted by the sound of snoring from the room and looking up noticed only Lord Hertford was still awake, reading a fable by the fireside.

"Lord 'ertford," poirot said in a Belgian whisper, so as not to awake the good people, "much of the fable you read is with merit, but it is not Aaron of ze Meadows 'oo is ze teller of ze tale."

Calm down Jose... I haven't made the information public and haven't disclosed my thoughts on the matter.

I am don diego de la vega, announced the new arrival, lord eagles has left following some indescretions with the maids, and I couldnt allow him to continue here.

You will find me a more mellow and thoughtful individual, with no dark side under the surface to be seen, anywhere.

MrCecil confided to Lady Tottenham that he thought don diego had been Lord Eagles all along.

Shorleyshomemishtake Lady Tottenham replied wiping the claret from her chin.

I have visited Don at his playing fields continued mr cecil, he is a clever and hardworking man who carries the burden of his estate on his back alone. No one appears to help him, and I read in his own Library that Don yearns for assistance, in the belief that even better things could be achieved if only there was someone with time and energy to assist him.

A pity, said lady tottenham, nice lord eagles has left, perhaps he could have helped. Or that lovely singer Hector I am sure he would have helped the Don.

the silence in the room was broken by the slow rythmical handclapping of Don diego, all eyes turned to him, " all very good,Poirot you really should see an agent you know, but it is just fiction"

Maybe so, agreed poirot but Lord Eagles is not the only one who has recently left the Spartan estate. Where is Mr Cecils erstwhile mixed doubles partner? Returned to her idyllic island life in Quand Vay with a tall dark stranger?

And Don is not the only newcomer, what of Charles Charles, the blacksmith, who has been very quiet recently?

Hastings, mon ami, remove Charles blacksmiths apron if you please.

Booby Laver passed out, the blood falling from his brain to a more abused organ as the apron dropped to reveal two bulging

biceps in a slightly unusual area.

welcome back, "Charles" said Poirot, or should I say Charlie, countess of quand vey..........
