That is the question that led Dr Karl Kruszelnicki of Sydney University to investigate one of science's biggest mysteries - the origins of naval fluff.

 

Five thousand people from all over the world monitored their belly buttons under Dr Kruszelnicki's supervision, and he made a number of fascinating conclusions.

Hair around your belly button picks up bits of fluff from your underwear and directs them towards the naval where they gather in a ball.

 

Most of the volunteers who shaved their tummies found that their belly buttons stopped collecting fluff.
