THE ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE

Right im in two minds,i believe that at step 5 there should be 12 leagues not the present 14 but im realistic enough to recognise that if they do scrap 2 leagues the ESL is certain to be one of them to go.the fact is it makes sense to have 12 step 5 leagues feeding into 6 step 4 leagues meaning in each step 5 league there would be 2 promotion places up for grabs,1 to the champions and another for the winners of a play off between teams reaching postions 2nd to 5th.is the ESL doomed?

You only have to look at the teams in the ESL to see it is doomed if it remains in it's current format.

We have Beaumont Ath who play at Mile End, East London. London APSA at Newham, Enfield 1893 from North London/Middlesex playing up in Herts, not to mention newcomers Mauririus Sports & Pennant with their average gate of 5 to 10.

In many ways the ESL has been a victim of it's own success. You only have to look further up the pyramid to see all the Essex clubs that have passed through the ESL.

Either we open the league up to the current Step 7 sides like White Ensign and Stambridge, or we go after other Essex clubs currently playing in other leagues, e.g. FC Clacton, Saffron Walden, Halsted etc.

of course no other step 5 league has fed so many teams into the higher pyramid leagues, beeswax tells me that teams like white ensign werent allowed promotion because of the ten year lease ruling which has apparentely now been changed to 1 year, so theres hope there, its unfair at the moment because theres teams at step 6,ridgeons 1, which have far better support, facilities than many ESL teams.lets be honest the ESL only admitted apsa, beautmont and mauritius to make up the numbers,im sure that last statement wont offend supporters of the 3 clubs because they dont exist.

grin

In all seriousness I wouldn't be surprised if outside pressure was put on the ESL to take those teams. It's not like they got into the league on merit. Mind you, neither did we (or Enfield Town for that matter)
