new years day is always a big day for groundhoppers but obviously not in the south east as theres bugger all on,just imagine if there were 3 matches on in the esl,say hullbridge starting at 11,southend manor at 1.30 and concord at 4,you would probably get hundreds of groundhoppers attending all 3 games.

Depends what you call "south east". There are two midday kick-offs in the Spartan South Midlands League, followed by a choice of three easily-reachable Southern League matches at 3pm. If you were desperate to get three games in, Oadby Town are playing at 7:45pm although that would obviously mean a late return to the "south east".

I agree that the ESL clubs are missing a trick by not playing on New Years Day. I assume there is no reason why clubs couldn't have brought forward a Saturday match from later in the season to play on this day. This is the ideal time of year for clubs to cash in generally. I saw Long Melford play in the Ridgeons League last Thursday afternoon. A crowd of 179 turned up on a "working day" and, with bar and refreshment sales, easily cleared £1,000 in overall takings. An ESL game put back from Boxing Day to the Thursday afternoon (or brought forward to Christmas Eve when there were absolutely no other games on) would have set some of the smaller ESL clubs up for the rest of the season financially. If the game was agreed early enough, players and officials could ensure that they had the time off work - a small sacrifice if they actually care about their club.

on new years day 2005 when we were in the esl we hosted waltham abbey at the bridge with a 1pm kick off and nearly 600 turned up and with gate receipts.. food and bar income we took 6 grand for our club ....we had to get special dispension from the league to play but with abbeys consent the game took place...

all clubs should play on new years day......
