Edgware Town grind out results. If their defence can be penetrated and then they have to chase tje game I feel that they can be beaten. Top of the league yet scoring less than 1.5 goals a game is not championship material.

Also I understand their ground situation has not been fully resolved. They have,I understand, a season's licence to use white lion from the developers.

Foster, Campbell, Bastian, Tickner, Harvey, Nyamah, Velandia, Jones, Crace, Hammatt, Foster, Nay, Mitchell, Georgiou, Hodge, Hasler

Gate 205

Witham even with an alleged 7 changes were never going to be an easy side to beat. Witham forced a save from Andre Foster early on even though town was dominating the play in general. Both Bastian and Jones spectacularly miscued chances wide. It was the 35th minute before Andy Jones forced a save from Paul Daley in goal for Witham Town. Shortly after Bryan Hammatt forced a save too and it felt like Town had found the magic key to open up the defence.

Second half saw Dave Bastian shoot over after a “don’t panic” goal mouth melee. Steve Velandia does likewise after a similar situation. Bryan Hammatt nearly scored with a wicked deflection. Ricci Crace shot. Andy Jones forces save and finally Ricci Crace rises beautifully and nod’s home a header.

Well the talk of the town boys had Simon Tickner as their man of the match. Mine was Jim Chandler. Fiona reaches for the smelling salts! Yes he had opportunity to watch Witham midweek and he took it. As a result he had a plan and he executed it. The defence put Witham to sleep which was for me the best defensive performance this season. It wasn’t a pretty game and I was disappointed with the midfield not getting more to the strikers but hey we won an awkward game that for me is two points gained.

DHT.

You forgot to mention the terrible two footed lunge by Andy Jones which is something this club has to stamp out, and that is no pun intended. It was awful and he should have been sent off.

Will anything be done about it by the club, or just because he got a yellow card then I'm supposing nothing will be done?

I had a poor view of the two footed tackle. I saw Andy start the move on one side of the goal post and come out the other side sliding! I guessed what had happened but can't claim to have seen contact lol!

I definitely thought this was one of our better performances, although I think we made them look less of a threat by defending as well as we did. I can see why MoM went to one of the defenders, as they were all excellent, and were probably the main reason that Witham looked pretty ordinary. I like us playing 3-5-2, especially with Harvey sweeping, as he’s got a bit of pace, is good positionally, and compensates for the other defenders lack of pace (not that I’m saying they’re *that* slow!). Tickner and Nyamah, as they showed on Saturday will win all their headers and tackles and as a 3, I thought it worked well.

Another good reason for 3-5-2 is that we’ve got 2 players in Campbell and Bastian who were born to be wing-backs – both good defensively, both capable of getting forward. Campbell for me can be very frustrating though, I think that he’s up there with the best player we have in the squad, but he seems to coast, rather than really pushing himself and I hope to see a lot more from him as the season goes on, as I know he’s more than capable.

Midfield was excellent, although we were given a lot of space by Witham – it’s no secret that I’m a big Velandia fan, the guy just oozes class at this level, and his close control, accurate passing, and the ability to create so much time for himself gives him the edge over the rest of the midfielders in our squad. That said, if there’s one criticism of him, it would be that he’s a little lightweight, but he seems to be putting himself around a lot more, and worked hard tracking back. Jones had one of his better games for the club (the ‘lunge’ wasn’t a high point though, but he worked hard and did well, as did Hammatt, who I think is better suited to midfield if Foster and Crace are both fit.

My MoM would have been Foster though – I think he’s made such a big difference to the side of late, and his aerial strength, tireless running and ability to hold the ball up, and bring others into the game is what we’ve needed all season. Crace is looking increasingly sharp now that he’s getting some games under his belt, and was very unlucky not to open the scoring with an excellent strinke that came back off the post with the keeper beaten, and his marker looking pretty silly.

Lastly, I think I should mention Andre Foster, who I think has been a very good acquisition. Having been away for much of November / December, I’ve only seen him twice, and each time, he’s impressed me, especially with his handling and kicking. I’m a big fan of Haslers’, who has been very solid in every game I’ve seen him play, and I think he’s unlucky to be on the bench, but it’s difficult to argue from what I’ve seen of Foster.

On a final note, can I just say how refreshing it is to hear some encouragement from the terraces, especially as things could have got frustrating when we didn’t score until fairly late. I think it’s already been said, but I’m sure the players do react well to some noise and support, and if we can do all we can to get behind them, it might just mean the difference between 3 points and 1. I agree about the cover at the Railway End too, assuming it’s feasible, and I’d be prepared to give up my Sunday mornings in the summer to help out if that’s what’s decided. Hope everyone has a good Xmas, and hopefully we’ll see more of the same at Potters Bar on Wednesday, although I really think that it’ll be a tough fixture.
