Press Statement - Simon Lane

Windsor & Eton F.C.

Press Release.

Saturday 15th December 2007

The Board announced today with considerable regret, the termination of Simon Lane’s position as Manager of Windsor & Eton Football Club.

Simon joined the club in June 2006 following an exhaustive search and interview process which included 20 candidates. He was previously Club Scout at AFC Wimbledon which followed a period as Manager of Berkhamstead Town.

During his 18 month period as Manager, Simon pulled together a talented squad of players and accepted the challenge of getting the club promoted back to The Premier Division at the first attempt and was given a significant budget with which to achieve this objective. Despite at one time leading the division the team finished in a disappointing 14th place last season. With hindsight the process of rebuilding the team following Dave Carroll’s departure took longer than originally anticipated and last season might therefore best be described as transitional in nature.

Significant signings in the summer suggested that a serious challenge for promotion could be mounted this campaign. On its day this season the team has shown itself to be more than a match for any team at this level with significant wins being achieved against Didcot Town in the F.A. Cup and Oxford City and Farnborough in the F.A. Trophy, the 3 teams that currently top the British Gas Business South and West Division 1. Frustratingly such excellent cup form has not translated itself into league results and dogged by injuries and inconsistency the team finds itself in 11th place some 13 points of the play off positions.

Chairman Peter Simpson said, ‘We can not continue to under perform in the league against the budget and equally we have not given up hope of reaching a play off position. I have no doubt that Simon has given his all to the job but the Board feels that despite his best endeavours the results have not mirrored his efforts. Simon has shown some exceptional qualities as a manager some of which are probably more suited to management at a higher level and certainly his ability to attract good players to the club has been a hallmark of his time at Stag Meadow. We are however determined to mount a serious challenge for a play off place in the New Year and we feel that a change made at this time will help create the fresh impetus required for the club to achieve this goal. Simon has been a consummate professional during his time with us and we wish him every success in his future career. He will always be welcomed back to Stag Meadow’.

Club Captain Mark Cooper will take temporary charge of team matters until a new Manager is appointed.

Ends.
