Gate 218

On a wet and waterlogged pitch the referee decided to bring the game on after lots of deliberation. I think Frank the groundsman would have rather he didn’t but the pitch did look too good Frank and you only have yourself to blame for that.

Well town started well and strongly and because we knew many of the Great Wakering Rovers players from Concord Rangers and Southend Manor we were confident. The new front pairing asked for by the fans of Foster and Crace really seemed to work well with Hammatt tucked in behind. I think the fans that came up with this were sage in the extreme. Ozzie early on got cross in for Ricci Crace to just miss with. Paul Campbell shot over on what looked the perfect opportunity. Bryan Hammatt shot over. The ref let a lot of tackling go due to the conditions before he booked Steve Magona. Sam Clarke and Rudi Hall had an altercation before the red mist descended and Rudi got his marching orders. Even though town went down to 10 men we were so in control town fans were confident we would still score.

The GWR bench appeared to be booked after some verbal directed at Kofi Nyamah.

ON 38 minutes a beautiful shot from the side line by Ozzie Foster and going IN was punched away by Louis Green but straight at the head of Bryan Hammatt who said thank you very much and headed it straight back and into the net. 1 – 0 @ halftime and Town still well on top.

Second half town began to shut up shop and much of the activity moved to the town penalty box. Steve Magona made a second heavy tackle and received a second yellow card. Suddenly we were shocked to be down to 9 men. Ricci Crace had a touch line shot saved. Bryan Hammatt had a shot saved. GWR scored twice but fortunately for Town the Linesman raised his flag! Ozzie off and Velandia on and Hammatt off and Dannie on.

Town fans cheered at the final whistle to see a performance with some guts after last week and the players appreciated the gesture.

Some fans asked if we could start with 9 men every week as we appeared to play better but hey 3 points is 3 points and very welcome!

Good gutsy performance all be it against an ineffective GWR, no quibbles on either sending off, Ozzie Foster ran himself into the ground as did Hammatt & Crace, PC in his best position looked good, jury still out on the new keeper, still a bit teflon!

A good and much needed win, well done Town!

I note in the NL today paper that referees in the West Midlands have gone on strike. I also note that Canvey Island fans deny all blame for the goings on at Witham last Saturday. I wasn't at Witham so I cannot speak from first hand evidence however I believe that what I was told as a child is correct.

"It takes two to have an argument"

On that basis having read the reviews of the incidents on the Canvey Island BB I have to say that I hope the FA come down really heavily on Canvey Island and Witham. The "fans" at Canvey have called the ref Mr Ditherer. They have said that he was not competent to referee at their level. They have suggested that the ref and the lino caused the trouble that ensued. All of those comments seem to me to be misguided and if I was a ref I would certainly think twice about wanting to control a Canvey game if the result of your endeavours was denigration for assisting in the provision of entertainment for the paying spectators.

So what has this to do with the GWR game yesterday. It would be easy to suggest that the ref was wrong yesterday as he sent off two of our players and booked Ossie without taking account the conditions. I did not see the second Magona foul and I had my view obstructed with regard to the Rudi Hall dismissal. What I saw was Magona making a challenge which was a foul and receiving his first yellow. I thought that was unjust but put it down to perhaps Magona being warned on previous occasions. I did see GWR players going unpunished for similar offences but perhaps, when told by the ref to watch their step, they took the ref at his word.

With regard to Rudi Hall's sending off I did not see the actual offence I do know that several Town players lost their rag and had to be dragged back and the ref could have sent off at least 2 other town players. I did see the number 7 only moments before kick out at Brian Hammett in a heading dual for which he had no chance of winning the header but by that kicking was able to get control of the ball. After that foul Rudi went in for his challenge on number 7 in a similar manner to the number 7's on Bryan Hammett. It is my understanding that he was not dismissed for his first challenge but subsequent activity when the ref blew for a foul. If the ref had blown for the foul on Brian then maybe, just maybe, Rudi would not have lost his rag. As it is Rudi went off and later we scored with 10 men. Jim now has to consider can he really afford to play with 10 men for most of a match as it was clear that with 10 men we were streets ahead of GWR and the "penalty" of the dismissal perhaps spurred us to greater heights.

As I said I cannot comment on Magona's second yellow. As for Ossie's yellow that really was a bad misjudgement. The ref was a long way behind the play at that time and may have seen it differently from me. I saw Ossie go in hard and determined but fairly for a 50-50 ball. At it was the keeper, who at the time was a normal outfield player as he was out of the area and could not handle the ball, got there first and kicked the ball away. The keeper, who was equally determined, went down before Ossie reached him and Ossie's momentum on the wet pitch carried him through. There was no injury as i recall and the goalie was not hurt. You could say it was a foul but a yellow. Football is not a non-contact sport.

However despite my criticism above may I take this opportunity of thanking Mr Robert MacKay for his services yesterday and state that his contribution to the entertainment was appreciated.

BTW yesterday as far as Value for Money is concerned was as entertaining as Redbridge. Those who are not present at these games are missing some thrilling, nailbiting stuff.

Keep it up lads.

Just what is the 'offical' homepage reporter on? Mind you, the world is full of opinions.

Quote. 'rather unfairly considering some of the challenges from players on both sides which the referee punished with no more than a free kick.' This is in relation to Magona's sending off.

Steve went straight through the back of a GWR player and gave the referee no option whatsoever.

We really should have been down to 8 players by the end as a certain defender tried to deliver a haymaker of a punch on another GWR player after a melee in our box! And we have been told the players have been warned and spoken to about their conduct!

I have said it before, and I will say it again. Something has got to change for the better in terms of discipline. Mind you, I will probably be moaned at for moaning!

I presume, some rather hallucinogenic Real ale.

Please! LOL - what made me laugh was the ref was getting the same voice from bothsides of the pitch after Rudi was sent. Poor ref must have thought he ran round the pitch just to berate him.
